~Strange sounds have been heard outside of New Pallet, The Ambassador urges trainers to be ready in case of an attack~
Summer is kicking in Port City! The temperature averages about 78°F (25°C) with a bit more rain than usual. Thunderstorms pop up every once in awhile, but overall, the sun is shining, the water's warm, and it looks like it'll be a great summer for the colonies.
"Don't forget to come back by after you're done! I want to see your new Pokemon!'
James rolled his eyes as his brother's words echoed in his head. While he would more than likely indulge in his brother's wishes after he met with the Good Professor, he also felt it a waste of time. With a Pokemon, he could more freely study the Pokemon that inhabited around their little stand of civilization. And heavens knows they needed more tamed Pokemon to aid them in constructing a home for themselves. While he did not have much of it growing up, technology would be useful in their advancement as a race; something they could only possibly do with the help of Pokemon.
James skittered along the streets of of Port City, aiming for the Laboratory as so he could receive his starter. He hoped that their stock was not full of unnecessary Pokemon of no value. While every tamed Pokemon was a treasure to them as a race, it was pointless to keep Pokemon that were of no use to them.
Eventually, the red head came upon the Laboratory; he had been inside a few times with his father, or running errands for him as he needed. It felt so different now, going in to ask for a Pokemon. At least he would be benefiting himself this time. With a sign, the man entered the Laboratory - and was greeted with a blast of chilled air. Well, at least it was nice in here.
"Excuse me," said James as he approached the front desk, "but I have an appointment with Professor Oak?"
It was rather quite in the lab, which might have been a little jarring because labs were usually a flurry of activity, with scientists running to and fro with their work. That was not the case right now though, and the receptionist seemed to be the only one in.
Looking up, the woman adjusted her glasses, getting a good look at James. Turning from him, she typed on her keyboard for a few seconds, before she smiled. "Welcome, Mr. Adams. Professor Oak has you scheduled for your appointment, that is correct. Please head through the doors to his private lab. He should meet you there," she said, returning to her work.
He was barely in the lab when a Growlithe ran up to him, tugging on his pant leg. Apparently he was looking for someone to play with. A laughing rang out from across the room as a man approached with a folder in hand. "This one always seems to have energy. Hello Jimmy, my name is Oak, but you can just call me the professor. It's nice to see you! I was hoping that you'd get here on time, that way I can get back to my research. Now, to as not to belay the fact, I have selected a few Pokemon for you to choose from. Come, let's look," he said, pointing to a small section of the lab were there were some Pokemon out of their poke balls.
A Sneasel was sitting on the counter next to a Ralts and a Tyrogue, playing some kind of game. A Litwick, though was hovering a bit away from the group by itself, looking said and forelorn. Growlithe followed James back to the other Pokemon, wagging his tail.
"You may only select one as your partner, so I will tell you a little bit about each to try and help with your decision. The Pokemon you already met is called a Growlithe. Fiercely loyal, these canines are amazing bodyguards and friends. Once you gain its trust, it will listen to no one besides you," he said, and the pup barked in agreement.
"Over there on the counter we have a Sneasel, a Tyrogue, and a Ralts. Sneasels are ice/dark type Pokemon. Arrogant and proud, these Pokemon have sharp claws and sometimes an even sharper wit. They don't mess around and can be brutal in battle."
The weasel looked up and gave a mischievous smile, before returning to the game. "Tyrogue is a fighting type Pokemon that has a lot of potential. The Tyrogue family tree splits three ways and the little guy will evolve depending on its training regime, into one of three fighting types that specialize in different fighting styles. Either kicking, punching, or acrobatic dance martial arts. They are hard working and always trying to get better."
"Next is Ralts. A psychic type Pokemon, Ralts have the specialized skill of detecting empathy. They know exactly how you are feeling, especially if you are distressed or sad/upset. They are amazingly friendly and like to give their trainers hugs to help make them feel better. Depending on gender, you could get a split evolution."
"Finally, up there we have a Litwick. Ghost and fire type, these Pokemon are very solitary because they leech life force from others. However, that leeching helps it and the Litwick family has some of the highest ability with fire and ghost attacks. A full grown Chandelure can spit roast a Mamoswine. Now, it is up to you. Please select one Pokemon and we will continue," he said with a smile, knowing how hard this particular decision can be on new trainers.
James tried not to show his annoyance at how the aid appeared so nonchalant about. However, James simply let it go and headed in the direction in which he had be pointed to. The trip was short - and, strangely, James felt at home in a lab. Perhaps because his father had shown it to him more than once, as well as having spent more than a few hours in it with the man. It felt odd, coming here to get his starter from the Good Professor instead of tagging behind his father like a lost Growlithe.
Speaking of which, as soon as the redhead entered the lab, he was suddenly 'attacked' by a small Growlithe. Most people might have been angered by the fact that the Pokemon was potentially ruining their pants - not everyone had enough coin to pay for more than a few pairs of pants - however, James merely smiled and patted the Growlithe on the head. The Pokemon released and looked at him quizzically, however began to pant happily. James jumped, then, as someone laughed - it almost seemed to echo throughout the room.
James stood erect again as the Good Professor approached them and began to speak.
"Ahem, my name is James," mumbled the man, though it almost appeared to go unnoticed as the Professor showed him to the other Pokemon, the Growlithe following closely behind. James seemed to accept the naming mistake as the Professor went to explain each Pokemon and their capabilities.
Not that James did not know of them already. He had read many of his parent's books over the different kinds of Pokemon in the Old World, and the Pokemon that were being offered each popped up from his memory in some way. He used both his information, as well as the information given to him by the Professor, to try and make a choice.
Growlithe were small Pokemon, but dog-like in turn. He could use that nose of the Pokemon's in order to track things down. And it's evolution, Arcanine, was taller than a Rapidash, and potentially more powerful. If he was lucky enough that the Puppy Pokemon evolved into a larger sized Arcanine, he could use the beast for a method of travel.
Sneasel were indeed known for their sharp claws and quickness. They were also known to live in groups, which might have made things easier for James when it came to taming Pokemon - had it not been for the look the duel type had given him. Albeit, it's evolution, Weavile, were highly intelligent, the Razor Claw needed for evolution tended to be quite rare. And the redhead did not feel like having to keep an eye on his Pokemon every waking minute.
Ralts and their evolutionary lines were remarkable, at best. Each seemed to have the capabilities concerning feelings of those around them. Not to mention, Gardevior were very protective of their trainers, and would give their life for them. Gallade, the male counterpart, had a personality akin to a Knight; chivalrous and gifted int he art of swordsmanship due to his blade-like arms. Both of those final evolutions could be quite handy out in the wilderness; especially if he were ever lucky to find their respective Mega Stones.
Litwick seemed like odd Pokemon. Being that they suck the lie force out of people and Pokemon unlike, James was unsure he would feel comfortable letting it too close to him, or out of its Pokeball for an extended amount of time. Perhaps another trainer would find the Pokemon useful.
Tyrouge was an interesting Pokemon, to say the least. He had yet to read of a Pokemon had had the choice of three different Pokemon it could potentially turn into without the use of stones or items. Although, he was sure that the training needed to evolve the Pokemon would be vigorous and long, such a thing that he did not have time for. However, the Pokemon did have the potential to learn a lot of moves, which was a rarity, it seemed. And besides, a fighting type with such an eagerness to fight could prove quit useful to him.
It looked as though it was going to be a tough choice. James bit the inside of his lip as he looked from one Pokemon to the next, obviously in deep thought. This would possibly be the only Pokemon he would not have to tame himself, or spend an arm and a leg trying to get already tamed. After what seemed like forever, James sighed and turned towards the Professor.
"I think I will have to choose the Tyrouge, if you will?"

"Tyrogue, wonderful choice Johnny!" Oak said with a smile, handing him the fighting type's poke ball. Wandering away from the new trainer with a look of thought on his face, Oak stopped at a shelf and started pulling items off of it, till he almost dropped the entire pile by adjusting his glasses.
Dropping the pile off on his desk, he motioned for James to come over. "Now, I've got some things for you. First up, is your X-Gear. This is your main way of communicating with me and others. My number has been pre-set inside of it, so feel free to text or call me whenever. As a starting trainer, you have the choice between a Photo Chip or a Dex Chip. Choose wisely," he said, opening a small case that had the two chips within.
"As a researcher, you are also afforded a few other items," he said, handing James the data log, the poke balls, and the mortar and pestal. "Finally, you are allowed to choose two trainer items under 35 value and two survival items under 35 value, using the Global market as a reference. Make your selections and then see me before you go," he said, sitting back down at his desk to work on something.
Eventually, when James was done, Oak would meet him by the door. "Now, you are basically set to go. Word is that there is some kind of strange disturbance in New Pallet. You should head there to help out with whatever the problem is. Has something to do with a Pokemon swarm. In any case, when you make a discovery, please contact me and send me the data log. I'll also text you periodically with things to investigate or check out. Do you have any questions for me?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
----------------------------------- Please choose Tyrogue's Egg Move, gender and ability Please choose between a Dex chip or a Photo Chip Please choose 2 Survival items which can be found at the Global Market for under 35₪ Please choose 2 Trainer Items which can be found at the Global Market for under 35
James followed the Good Professor swiftly; contemplating asking the man if he needed help in carrying his items, but figuring he was alright. Well, if dropping the items in a clutter was considered alright. The Tyrogue, upon realizing that the red haired man actually chose him, said farewell to his friends and jumped down off of the counter and caught up with his new trainer. James appeared to wait until the Professor had sat down before moving to choose from the items given.
The Dex Chip was an automatic choice for the up and coming Researcher. It would aid him in learning about the strange Pokemon that were found in Mi-aro. The red head made sure that the X-Gear and Dex Chip were in place before going to choose the other items in front of him.
The bed roll and compass seemed like the more logical choices out of the survival equipment. He knew he was more likely to spend his time outdoors during the first part of his journey; it was hard to find many wild or Feral Pokemon in the city than it was in the wild. And he loathed to admit that he was not entirely good with directions. His next choice was two potions; he figured he would need them for the road, in case Tyrogue got injured in a battle. James knew little of self defence - especially against a Pokemon - and did not feel like trying to learn such in a dangerous situation.
"I suppose that would be all, hm?" James muttered to himself as he put the items he was given into his bag. He turned, ready to leave, figuring he was done - when the Good Professor stopped him before he could do so.
A swarm? He had heard of such things from passing pedestrians before he had came here, and had honestly thought of heading that way anyhow. It had intruiged him to no end, however without a Pokemon, it would have been rather difficult to actually get there, much less fend them off if they were to attack him.
"I think I will be alright," said James cooley. "Thank you for your help. I will be in touch when possible."
With that, James turned and exited the Lab, Tyrogue following close behind.
