appearance
James is a rather tall and lean man; he stands at about five feet and seven inches, and it looks as though he has hardly any fat or muscle on him. His skin tends to be porcaline-like, even for a man who tends to spend most of his time outside researching Pokemon. Rarely will you ever find him dirty or covered in grime; he tends to keep himself as clean as possible, if he can help it.
James' hair is quite long; it stops just below his shoulder blades, and is often times put up into a ponytail. It is the color of bright red - almost the color of blood, as James has heard more than once - and tends to appear well kept, even if down. His eyes are an emerald green, which are often covered by red, librarian-like glasses.

clothing
everyday Whenever James is venturing around into unknown territory - aka, routes that have generally already been explored and are moderately safe for people such as themselves - they tend to wear either comfortable slack or khaki-like pants (they look as though they were made from old jeans, though they still look rather nice) alongside a t-shirt with either a short sleeved jacket or or full lengthen one. Hiking boots are their favorite type of foot wear. | formal James does not currently own anything too formal for this day and age. Seeing as how they could all die at any moment by the cruel world they have been thrust into, it would be rather pointless for them to own such clothing. Perhaps this will be re-written later, when fancy clothing become more abundant. |
backpack
James' 'backpack' appears to be a suit case similar to one a Professor might carry; however, there seem to be more nooks and cranny's both inside and outside the case. Inside, he usually tends to keep papers, and a few miscellaneous items as well. He keeps a small side pouch which he uses for other items that will not fit in there. It seems to have been patched up more than once.
personality
James tends to be a rather accessible and easy going person, despite his often apprehensive personality whenever you first meet him. Upon first meeting him, you will find that James can be a bit abrupt and blunt; there is not much you will not hear from him. He speaks the truth, even if you become close to him. One might think that he believes himself to be better than others than the way he talks; as if he is apathetic and uncaring of other people around him. That is partly the truth; unless he considers you an acquaintance or someone worth keeping, James tends not to care what actually happens to you. Not to say that he would not hold down a conversation with you; however, one might not want to with his views.
James is very serious about his work; even arrogant at times when others mock it. Friends have to keep a close eye on him when he believes he is close to making a huge discovery, else he becomes asocial, and will have to be reminded to eat, sleep, etc. His work tends to be his life, as is everyone else's, and takes it very seriously. The red head can be very proud of himself, however not overly so. Perhaps the only good side about his seriousness towards his work is that he is more than willing to share his findings if it means gaining more information in the process.
James tends to be a rather relaxed and professional person in most situations. It is hard for him to get riled up or overly worried over something. Even if you managed to offend him in some way, it will often be hard to tell; and if a comeback is necessary, it will often be cool and calm when it escapes him. The red head is also a very logical person at times If you want to confuse or fluster the man easily, then simply break his logic in any way possible. He will not be too happy when and if he finds out, though.
As I said before, while all appears bad, James can actually be an accessible and easy to get along with person; the rest of him having been built up from his parents and the lack of social interaction growing up. To those who he can consider acquaintances - or even friends - he will be a very loyal friend. He can be very insightful and innovative, which would be very helpful to those who venture out into the wilderness.

the backstory
The old world had once been a lush and wonderful place; not many had a care in the world back then, before everything changed. People and Pokemon used to live in harmony, and rarely did anyone have to worry about where their next meal was coming from. Civilization was around almost every corner. Peace was but a virtue during that time. Sure, on the rare occasion a embodiment of evil would arise to conquer the world and it's people in some way; however, it was rare that they went unpunished.
James' parents - Marie Amelia and Alexander James Adams - lived fairly decent lives as an archaeologist and Pokemon Researcher. They were young when they were married, yet compatible enough that there were no worries for divorce or resentment towards one another; and even if they had lost their physical desires for one another, both agreed that they were willing to stay together after the fact, if only to have secure company for the rest of their days.
James had been told that the destruction of their home world - the Old World, as the man often dubs it - took places nearly a decade before his birth. All he knows about it are pictures and stories that his parents had gladly told him whenever he might have asked, however books were his main source of knowledge. But I digress. Marie and Alex came through the portal shortly after its opening; and were positively stunned at the world around them.
Alexander aided as he could with his knowledge of Pokemon species and variations that had been seen in the previous world, cataloging them all and trying to make sense of them and how they could aid or benefit the men that trespassed on their land; Marie used her skill of archaeology to both study the different types that resided in Mi-aro, and to aid in the construction of their cities as so it would best suit them and use the environment around them.
James was born a few years after the couple had finally felt settled in. Being their first child, a lot seemed to be expected of him; especially since he was one of the first generations to be born into this new world. James was raised with the knowledge that he would potentially become like his father; that is, he would probably find himself studying various Pokemon and figuring out how they worked, their typing and egg groups, etc.
James did not need much pushing to do academic work. As soon as he had learned how to read, James was picking up any and every book he cold find; even going so far as to read his parent's advanced college books that had been brought over from the other world. Needless to say, his parents were rather proud of him. After all, not many six year old can read a book about the Pokemon anatomy and actually learn something from it without being grossed out.
As James finally began schooling in Port Town - for even though he had plenty of schooling at home, and was well above his peers academic wise, his parents felt that he needed to learn about what the new world had to offer in its schooling - the Adams were blessed with another child - a boy whom they named Samuel Ethan.
If James had cared what so ever that he had a sibling, he did not seem to show it much. More often than not, if he was not at school or sitting at the kitchen table reciting his numbers or other such things, James could often be found either in his room, still studying, or wandering around the streets of Port, trying to absorb as much of the life around him as possible. More than once, his parents had to retrieve him from elderly neighbors houses because he had asked them for any knowledge or stories about any and everything they knew; of which they often gave.
It was not like Marie and Alexander could wholly complain. More often than not they were busy with their jobs, trying to help their race to settle in and make this New World a more hospitable places for them and their children. Often times the two children would be in the care of a babysitter or one of their parent's Pokemon or, on the rare occasion, James would be left in charge.
It was not until around age thirteen that James even began trying to act as if his brother was alive. Albeit, he did not seem to enjoy it. It was obvious, at least on the outside, that no matter how much James ignored him, Samuel still adored his little brother. But it was also quite obvious that he and his brother were quite different. Whereas James was quite and well behaved as a child, Samuel was rowdy and enjoyed playing outside more with his friends or their parent's Pokemon than studying. The only time he ever seemed to sit still was when James offered to read him stories of the Old World.
At age sixteen, it became a common sight for James to follow his father around while he worked. It was obvious by now that James exceeded most of his generation in intellect - at least with what little resources and knowledge they had to pass on to his generation - and so his father figured it would not hurt his son to get a head start on a career, or to at least figure out what he wanted to become. James was also becoming closer to his brother, although not as close as their parents might have hoped.
After years of tagging his father around to learn the skills of his trade - and on the rare occasion having to put up with his brother, whom his father often let tag along - James felt as though it were time to get his own Pokemon, and figure out what he wanted to do with his career.
