It was early morning when the trio set off from Port City towards New Pallet, finding their way onto route one. Although summer was really only beginning Lilith found herself boiling pretty quickly under the sun in her all black attire, she hoped to find some shade on the rough path between the settlements by midday. The tall woman had made this walk hundreds if not thousands of times prior. Sometimes running errands, sometimes as a body guard for hire. The only difference this time was her two new companions who followed along in their own way. Ignis the Houndour trotted a few feet ahead of the woman, nose pointed forward and sharp eyes ever seeing. From the way he held his body, it was obvious he was on edge. Vesper the Noibat rested dutifully on Lilith's head, small purple hands grasping the odd horn-like headpiece.
After receiving the two from The Ambassador, Lilith had headed home. She was lucky she only lived about a mile from the building and was greeted with much enthusiasm. The walk home had been slow, Lilith feared her lifelong companion, now an aging Growlithe, would resent her new choice in pokemon. He seemed standoffish at first, but was quickly play wrestling the Houndour the moment Lilith turned her back. Her mother had talked her into staying the night and Lilith happily obliged, still not overly confident in her ability to simply go back to living on her own after a year's hiatus from most of the world.
The following morning however was filled with excitement. Lilith had spent the evening getting to know her two new pokemon, finding herself thrilled with their different personalities. Vesper seemed more than happy to be babied by the woman, moving her head subtly under her trainer's pale hands for a petting every time she could. It was obvious by Ignis' willingness to play wrestle with anyone who looked his way, that he'd be the main attacker of the team.
Now that Lilith had crossed the threshold onto route one, the doubt slowly crept in. She tried to keep Ms. Nguyen's words in her head. Something had been heard in the forests around the small settlement of New Pallet. The reports had been coming in for weeks and despite the woman's best efforts, she found herself heading towards the sounds. Lilith spent the early hours of the morning asking around about what exactly had been seen or heard in the forests to the west. All she managed to find out was second hand information. It didn't take long for Lilith to realize she needed to actually get herself to New Pallet to find out what exactly was going on.
Before leaving the safety of Port City, Lilith bought herself some food and stowed it away for later. Whatever was happening in the woods, she planned to find out. It was the least she could do for the The Ambassador after her rather generous gift of a Noibat and Houndour.
The rough path of route one left the woman feeling winded pretty quickly. The moment she took her eyes from the grown, she found herself tripping over the various pot holes dotting the land. It was clear that the route was neglected. As the woman bumbled along, she cursed the inhabitants of New Pallet and Port City. This was one of the heavier travelled routes, made apparent by the crumbling passage way. Why had they allowed it to crumble? Lilith knew resources weren't exactly abundant, but she still felt as if they should make an effort to keep the quickest form of transportation somehow walk-able.
Vesper's tensing on her head brought Lilith back. She glanced down at Ignis, the fur on the back of his neck standing on edge. His black nose twitched quickly as he inhaled the scents of the of the surrounding foliage. Lilith's eyes scanned the horizon, seeing nothing past the endless foliage that seemed to stretch in every direction. Vesper chirped, her eyes following Ignis' rapid head movement to the left. "What is it Ignis?" Lilith asked, having stopped walking herself and focusing her attention on whatever was out there.

The earth beneath Lillith's feet began to vibrate. Tiny cracks formed in the hardened dirt which caused small pebbles and rocks to slip into the ground. Before the trainer had time to react, the area around the trainer fell out, creating a deep rectangular hole in the path with Lillith, and her Houndour, stuck inside. Sharp, clawed paws separated in the air and fell to the side of their owner. Ten to fifteen feet away from the team stood a mammalian creature. Its body was black with blue stripes with a white snout. A star-shaped, pink nose extended from the end of the snout, which covered two beady, black eyes. Growls came from the creature as it shot its claws in front of it, ready to attack. -ba boink bonk bonk- The two Domestic Pokemon instantly picked up the sound. It almost sounded as if two rocks were being pounded together... Ah! At the edge of the hole, two small, blue rocks were bonking into each others bodies in perfect sync as the moved. Roggenrola right? They had excellent hearing, but no form of vision, so they must not have noticed the hole in front of them. The two rocks fell perfectly onto the other creature's head. "Bur!!" it screeched with a vicious shake of the head. The two Feral boulders certainly heard that sound. They quickly picked themselves up, ran past Lillith and cowered at the far side of the hole's edge. If Lillith had expected the usual trip to New Pallet... Well, she was in for a surprise.

As the ground beneath them trembled, Lilith's only coherent thought as she fell a solid six feet below was, 'Well this is unexpected.' She landed as gracefully as one would expect of someone who had just had the proverbial rug pulled from beneath them. Lilith found herself a wee more worried about the pain in her ankles then the scraped palms she had managed to acquire in a vein attempt to stop herself. Having landed on her feet, Lilith considered herself lucky that years of physical training hadn't completely been forgotten on her break from exploring the wilds of the world. Her hand instinctively went to the pokeball on her belt where a mysterious egg she had received from The Emissary before leaving home sat safety within the confines of the ball. Granted pokeballs were considered safe, she still worried that the jarring impact could harm her newly acquired friends.
Ignis however, hadn't fared well at all. Although he was on his feet, his dark eyes focused on the threat that stood before him, it was obvious from the slight tremble in his knees that the fall had been hard. Vesper on the other hand, seemed as if she had fared quite well. The second that Lilith began to slip into the crevasse, she had let go of her perch atop the woman's head instantly. Small purple wings kept her afloat, allowing her to quickly regain her position atop her trainer's head when the danger of falling deeper had passed.
Lilith felt herself becoming frustrated at the new twist of events. It wouldn't be hard to get herself out of the rather wide hole.... But it would scuff her shoes and possibly rip her gloved hands. A myriad of curses slipped from her lips as she surveyed the surroundings, eyes ever scanning for an easier foot hold. Ignis' sharp bark quickly snapped her out of her search and put the focus on the danger in front of her.
Lilith hadn't even noticed the pokemon standing defensively across from them. The fire type's fur was already standing on edge as he barred his teeth, the low growl never quite giving away. Lilith quickly pulled out her X-Gear, touching the button on the bottom of the screen to bring up the Dex Chip. She pointed it at the pokemon before her, quickly glancing at the type chart that popped up in the entry. "Ground type, huh?" She said, eyes looking to Ignis as she tried to formulate a strategy. "No move type advantage here." She mused out loud, realizing her best chance at getting past the angry ground type was by knocking it out.
Just as she was about to give Ignis an attack order, everyone seemed to pause as their eyes turned towards the sound of the metallic clanking that was approaching at a steady pace. Lilith had no time to react as the two bumbling rock pokemon managed to fall directly into the hole with no hesitation. In an almost perfect act of irony, they managed to fall onto the Drilbur that stood before them. Okay, at least now the playing field was somewhat leveled. As the two Roggenrola ran past, Lilith made a mental note to help them out of the hole once she finished with the pokemon before her. Lilith allowed the beam on her X-Gear to follow the two on the off chance they decided to attack later on.
It was evident that Lilith would not be leaving without a battle, as made obvious by the Drilbur's offensive stance. Lilith thought of her two pokemon, and which one would fair better with the opponent. It didn't take much for Lilith to choose Vesper, favoring her ability to avoid most attacks and her immunity to ground based attacks anyway. "Alright Vesper," Lilith said, reaching up and gently pulling the purple bat pokemon from the perch between her horns, "Start with a tackle, let's end this quickly!"
Vesper nodded, taking off from her trainer's outstretched hands. Vesper swopped over, staying just out of reach of the pokemon's drill-like hands. In a quick jerking movement, she shot towards the ground type using gravity to increase her speed as she began her assault.

- I made a one-shot thread of Lilith recieving the egg, but only thought it fair to mention it now that she "remembers" she has it. Located here for reference.

The creature released a hiss with the attack. It had excellent senses in most areas, but it was nearly blind so aerial attacks would definitely be advantageous to the team. Unfortunately, since the Feral wasn't able to see Noibat all too well, it didn't have any choice other than to attack its other opponents.
Huge claws sunk into the earth. Each end of the star-shaped nose seemed to point in Lillith and Growlithe's direction. With a low grunt, the creature exhumed a pile of mud towards Growlithe.
This would be a nice and dandy fight, if the creature hadn't added a new element by tossing the dirt. In the hole created by the Feral's Mud Slap, there was a small human skull, or there was good assumption of it at least since most of it was still covered.
Was that this Pokemon's doing? Did it kill a human using this same technique? Did it seek said human out, or did the poor thing just walk over its territory? Oh my....

Lilith almost high fived herself on the spot when Vesper's attack hit. It was clear by the way the Drilbur reacted that he couldn't actually see the flying type. Lilith had already counted this battle as a victory despite the obvious strength difference. That was until, the Drilbur turned it's attention to Ignis who stood protectively in front of Lilith. The woman watched in grim curiosity as the ground pokemon dug it's large claw-like hands into the ground and flung a thick spray of mud at the duo.
Vesper of course, was far out of range and didn't even feel the movement of air created by the mud flinging. Ignis and Lilith? Not as lucky. Ignis had managed to take the brunt of it simply by standing there. Lilith however, managed to get some of the mud on the front of her black dress. 'Thank god the Drilbur was aiming low.' Lilith thought, trying to swallow the rage at her outfit being soiled so quickly into her adventure.
Ignis yelped as he pawed at his face. Large black paws rubbed rather ineffectively at his face, trying to clear the mud from his eyes. Lilith stared down the Drilbur, green eyes cold with determination. It was then that she noticed something odd about the pokemon. From the picture her Dex Chip had brought up, wasn't the pokemon supposed to have a small pink nose, instead of the star shaped protrusion at the end of it's face? There was really no time to think about that when her eyes caught the sight of something half buried and all too familiar near where the Drilbur had launched it's attack.
Had she seriously underestimated the power of Drilbur? Was this pokemon another murderous feral or simply an angry domesticated one? At this point, Lilith's earlier determination slowly began to fade. She wasn't much for double battles but sometimes it warranted it. Lilith certainly didn't want her skull to be found later on by the next unfortunate person.
"Ignis and Vesper we're launching a double attack." Lilith said, trying to keep the slight wavering of nerves from her voice, "Ignis use ember. Vesper, while he's doing that use a a supersonic. Let's take him down hard!"
Ignis stepped forward, ears standing upright as he tried to zero in on the sound of the Drilbur's breathing to determine where exactly he was. Taking a deep breathe, he powerfully exhaled embers from the pit of his stomach in what he hoped was the direction of his opponent. While that was happening the Noibat swooped overhead and let out a powerful screeching noise. It echoed deafeningly in the crater, causing Ignis to whine and Lilith to cover her ears. Lilith hoped the attacks would hit before the Drilbur had time to react.

The simple fact of the situation was that there was not a large amount of room to maneuver in the hole and so when Lilith's two Pokemon started to bear down on the feral Drilbur, it had no avenue of escape. Even though it caused the collapse of that piece of pathway, it was now finding itself on the verge of a beat-down. Burning red hot in the dim light of the underground, the embers from the dark canine flew through the air. Not a fan of light and heat, the ground instinctively put its large, spade like claws up into the air to defend its head. Many of the embers bounced off this makeshift shield, but not all of them and they burned into the claws of the ground type, making it whine in pain. The wild Drilbur really couldn't have imagined that his day was going to take this kind of a turn. To make matters even worse for the little mole Pokemon, the Noibat arched into the air before unleashing some wicked supersonic sound waves. Being a ground Pokemon, the Drilbur had much better senses of hearing and smell, and so that only amplified the effect that the massive sound waves were having on the poor Pokemon's eardrums and equilibrium. Stumbling around a little bit, the mole Pokemon looked like lost and confused and when it turned to its right and stabbed the wall of the tunnel with one of its claws, it was all but confirmed. Noibat's supersonic had done its job, the poor Drilbur very disoriented and confused. Now would be the perfect time for Lilith's team to put on a frontal assault and strike, before the disorientation of the wild Pokemon faded away. Drilbur is now confused

Lilith watched in silence as her team launched the assault. She clicked her tongue in annoyance when the Drilbur lifted it's large clawed hands and deflected the majority of the ember attack Ignis had launched. She should have seen that coming, Lilith mentally scolded herself. She would know for next time that Ignis had to aim around the pokemon's natural defense. Still, Vesper's attack had done it's job. When the Drilbur turned and attacked the wall of the crevice, Lilith knew she had a temporary advantage.
Down in the gaping hole, the Drilbur had a bit of an advantage over her own pokemon. Any ground based attacks wouldn't effect Vesper. If she could manage to keep herself out of the way of the Drilbur's claws she'd be good. Despite Ignis' muddy handicap, she knew she had to use him as a heavy hitter while the ground type was confused. "Alright Ignis, use ember again. Aim for the Drilbur's feet. We don't want him deflecting the attack again." Lilith commanded. "Vesper use tackle again. Let's hit him with everything we've got before he snaps out of the confusion."
The fire type nodded, once again taking a sharp inhale and then releasing hot embers stored inside it. Ignis aimed low, hoping that he would at least make some contact despite his inability to see properly. Vesper once again rose quickly into the air, taking a sharp dive above the Drilbur. Lilith mentally crossed her fingers, hoping that the combined attacks would be enough to take down her opponent before the confusion wore off.
As she stared, Lilith absently ran her gloved fingers around the small pokeballs on her belt. In the third one lay a mystery egg she had received a few days ago. As the battle raged on, the woman couldn't help but let her mind shift to wonder about her eventual new teammate.

Ignis’ flames were aimed low. A little too low; poor thing still couldn't quite see through the mud in his eyes. The attack missed the intended target of the Drilbur’s stubby brown feet, but did have some affect. The ground near the feral’s feet warmed up from the onslaught of flames and a few stray sparks did reach their intended target. The large mole pokemon took a few steps back and fell on its back in an attempt to escape the heat; just in time to avoid the aerial attack from Vesper by a hair. These two needed to work on their timing when working together.
The Drilbur recovered quickly to its feet, oblivious to the danger it had just evaded, and blindly slashed at the hound in front of it. The long sharp nails made a direct hit with the poor starter’s nose. After gaining some space from its attackers the brown pokemon began to spin. This was rather odd behavior in a middle of a fight. What was the Drilbur planning?

Lilith frowned as her commanded attacks made a rather poor offense. Granted, she hadn't exactly told them to time their attacks but she had assumed it would have been a given. Lilith mentally reminded herself that was something they'd have to work on later. Once again, her hand reached down the belt on her waist. Six small pokeballs sat idly waiting to be used. In the middle one was a mysterious egg she had received a few days prior. By the time it hatched, Lilith promised herself she would have gotten timing attacks right. The year she had taken off clearly had hurt her, more than she was willing to admit.
Returning her focus to the battle at hand, she managed to watch Ignis get a sharp scratch to the nose. Lilith felt herself wincing as the canine type pokemon yelped in pain and sprang backwards. At least Vesper had fared better, though her attack missed it seemed as if the Drilbur wasn't all too sure of her presence. Lilith knew she could use that to her advantage, somehow.
The mercenary watched in interest as the Drilbur began to spin. Lilith tilted her head to the side, wondering vaguelywhat exactly was happening before her. At least it bought her some time, the woman reasoned, a bit wary of whatever the pokemon was planning. "Alright Ignis, use ember again. He can't really avoid it this time." Lilith cried, hoping beyond hope it was true. There wasn't a whole lot of room in the crater, yet Ignis had managed to miss the majority of his attacks thus far. Lilith hoped the pokemon's tight spinning would give her the advantage she needed to actually land a hit. "And Vesper, use tackle!"
Her two pokemon nodded. Once again Vesper rose quickly before diving straight down onto the spinning pokemon. Meanwhile Ignis shot forth another barrage of hot embers, hoping his attack wouldn't bounce off the pokemon's hide.

The wild Drilbur looked like a brown furry top as it continued to spin, slowly picking up speed. Eventually, its limbs became a blur from the speed of the rotations. Due to the nature of the crater, all of the mole's spinning was kicking up loose dirt and sending it in all directions. It wasn't enough to act like an attack in any way, but surely getting pelted with loose sand and dirt was not a pleasant experience for anybody or any Pokemon.
When Ignis's flame attack flew at the mole, the spin velocity from the rapid spin actually caught the ember flames and pushed them up into the air, away from the mole and not causing any damage to the ground type. At the same time, as the Noibat came dive bombing in to the mole, the head of the bat made contact with the spinning mole. That in turn, thanks to physics, rebounded the bat into the wall of the crater. She was fine from the impact against the dirt wall, but it was possible that she was dazed. Spinning around a top would make anyone dizzy, and so the case was here.
Spinning faster and faster, Lilith might recognize that the mole was slowly getting closer, its razor sharp claws acting like a moving chainsaw. Lilith would have to make a decision quickly, before the Drilbur turned her into diced carrots.
Maybe that skull was the Drilbur's doing afterall....
