~Strange sounds have been heard outside of New Pallet, The Ambassador urges trainers to be ready in case of an attack~
Summer is kicking in Port City! The temperature averages about 78°F (25°C) with a bit more rain than usual. Thunderstorms pop up every once in awhile, but overall, the sun is shining, the water's warm, and it looks like it'll be a great summer for the colonies.

if i sing out to the rain
will the sun come out again?
june. 1:55pm. sunny as hell.
Here he was. In front of the building. Staring at a doorknob.
The voice in the back of his head told him he needed to go ahead and get in there, to stop standing around in the heat of summer and finally get a job. Well, he had a job... just an unofficial one. then go make it official. that was harder than he would like to admit. he was all for a good adventure, sure, but this felt more like a job interview than anything else. perhaps he was just too sheltered and overthinking things. yes, that was definitely it. the man let out an irritated huff of air as he tugged on the hem of his patchwork shirt made primarily of furfa with strips of miltank hide here and there. he remembered being more interested in the process of preparing the hide rather than actually putting on his clothing. his mother couldn't even answer his questions on that when he was little.
ah, right, mother. he was doing this on behalf of his mother. he couldn't stand around all day when mother was waiting back at home for a full report. with that in mind, he reached out and opened the door to the building, stepping inside after giving the hem of his shirt one last tug before his hand moved to rest on the right strap of his back. ruby orbs swept across the entrance lobby before settling on the woman at the front desk. he strode towards the desk with a smile, softly tapping on the desk to draw the woman's attention.
"i'm here to see professor oak. ah, the two o'clock appointment?"
The lovely, red-headed woman piqued her eyes to the man as he spoke. He was certainly a cutie. With a tilted head and a bit of a blush the woman smiled and pointed to the door on her left. "Yes sir, right through that door. The professor is expecting you of course!" her eyes followed as he entered Quercus's lab, she let out a sigh then continued her paperwork.
Quercus wasn't in the immediate vicinity, which was a bit odd for him as he was always waiting by the door for newcomers. "No no no no! Don't touch that!" A cry came from an adjacent room, then a crash. "Oh c'mon guys!" The door that was hiding the excitement creaked open, four tiny Pokemon strolled out looking quite pleased with themselves. Two more followed a defeated man with a ponytail and lab coat, probably Oak.
He perked up as soon as he realized the new trainer had arrived. "Oh! Did Tiffany let you in?" The professor scrambled to straighten himself up and held out his hand to the man. "Professor Quercus Oak! At your service!" A somewhat forced smile followed as he moved their attention to the Pokemon in the middle of the lab. "So much for that Escape Rope I had been working on," he released an exasperated sigh, "can't keep these kids out for much longer, so let's get to it!"
Quercus gestured towards the group of four Pokemon. Togepi, Pampour, Cubchoo, and Smoochum. "Those four are the ones just set me back a few months. All the Pokemon I've chosen for you are babies, that is, fresh out of the egg." A sly smile crossed his lips, "After all, what better way to learn independence than to take care of a newborn?"
"Togepi is a Pokemon known for bringing happiness to others, but more than that, it is a curious little egg that would make an excellent partner for a Researcher, especially once it evolves into its stronger forms." As the professor spoke, the baby was curiously pulling the Pampour's tail, confirming Oak's words. In response, the monkey pat the egg's head til it toppled over and started a fest of tears.
Another sigh from Oak. "That Pampour seems to lack any emotion as far as I can tell, of course, it's still a baby so I don't know much about it. I picked it mostly because I know you dislike fire, and a water Pokemon is simply a good option to keep around. Also, its final stage shares your fabulous hair!" it was quite odd to hear the man say "fabulous," but didn't give Yuuki much time to process it.
"Cubchoo and Smoochum are next." The two ice-types were taking turns patting each other 's heads, very adorable, oddly confusing. "Normally I only give trainers five options and each are a different type, but I know you're fond of winter so Ice types are obviously great choices! Cubchoo is soft, and I've found that most bear Pokemon have very strong maternal instincts, so if you ever find yourself in a bout of trouble, you can count on this one to protect you. Smochum, well, I just felt that you might need a maternal figure out in the wild if you ever leave Port City!" He let out a pretty strong chuckle, a sigh finished his humor, then he continued.
"Next we have Mareep." The sheep was using the professor's leg as a barrier between it and the other four. "Mareep would be, I think, a great fit for you Yooko! Not only are they soft, but if they learn Flash, they can use their tails to illuminate a small area around it. Even better, Mareep wool can be dyed, or if you're willing to shear it, you can also get some pretty quality wool. Not to mention that if you are ever able to learn how to Mega evolve your Pokemon, you and a Mega Ampharos would be a perfect portrait, for obvious reasons of course." It started to slowly back away once it realized the professor was talking about it. "This one is particularly shy," Quercus snorted, "you could even say a little sheepish!"
"Finally, we have Happiny." The pink Pokemon hadn't left Mareep's side the entire time, it was doing its best to comfort the sheep and calm it down. "Someone who's not used to the wilderness and is accustomed to having a caregiver constantly by their side, like yourself, might want to consider a Happiny. This one seems to have a good head on its shoulders, so I'm sure you'll be in good shape with it!"
Oak grabbed a "Pamphlet" from the table and handed it to the man. "Of course, if you don't like the kids, here are some other choices for you! Don't take too long though, they'll destroy my entire lab if we keep them out together for much longer!"

if i sing out to the rain
will the sun come out again?
june. 2:xxpm. sunny as hell.
He was expecteD? oh, well, of course he was. he had an appointment. of course he was being expected. this was going to be good for him. he would get some social experience, something he lacked in, as well as pokemon experience, something he definitely lacked in other than those he had pestered as a child while trying to get into their nests or trying to pull their tails. the man gave the woman a nod before he turned towards the door, keeping his steps light while he straightened his back, trying not to slouch. first impressions were very important, and he didn't want to--
no?
slowly opening the door, he could hear a voice echoing from an adjacent room. yuuki glanced around the room before settling his eyes on another door just as it began to open. his head tilted slightly in confusion, and surprise shone in his eyes as a handful of young pokemon came out followed by a man. the professor? definitely the professor. he opened his mouth to speak only to have professor oak beat him to it. he put a smile on his face, dismissing his earlier confusion and surprise, and took the man's hand to shake.
the man turned to look at the six pokemon, yet his body stilled at the professor's words. how did he? ah, that's right. mother made the appointment. she probably told them everything. that would explain it. but, if he wasn't used to take care of himself, how would he take care of an infant pokemon? then again, if he could somewhat care for his family after his father's death, he could do this. think of it as a new adventure. a new learning experience. yeah, yeah.
yuuki crouched down to get a better look at the small pokemon. he listened intently to the professor as he spoke, glancing up every now and again whenever jokes were made or when there was another comment that said his mother was giving away far too much information that he would have liked. ah, well, what was he to do? make the appointment himself? it... definitely would have helped. but, as he watched the infant pokemon before him, he was almost glad that she did. after all, they were pretty cute.
wait, yooko? uh. close, but no cigar. he wasn't going to give the professor anything more than a strange look, however. if he wanted to call him yooko, he could go ahead and do it. chances are he wouldn't remember names all too well, either, if he had to deal with people coming in for starters, work, and pokemon all at the same time.
he went over what he knew about each pokemon in his head, using the limited knowledge given through the books he had read countless times in his home or when he was off at study sessions. he let out a soft hum as the professor finished explaining each pokemon before glancing up at him from where he was crouched near the door. "may i have the togepi, professor?"
you're about to embark on a dangerous journey into the unknown. who do you choose as an ally?
With yet another chuckle, Oak picked up the crying Pokemon and handed it to the trainer. "Of course! I'm sure you two will make an excellent team!" He then proceeded to withdraw the others and found his way to a shelf in the back. A few moments later he returned with a number of items that he laid on the desk in front of the new trainer.
The pile included a Data Log, a Mortar & Pestle, and 4 pokeballs. Quercus then showed him the X-Gear. "Now this X-Gear already has a Holo Chip with my number installed in case you ever need me. You can also choose a Photo or Dex chip for the device." The professor pointed to two more piles, "And two of each of those."

oh, goodness, he wasn't expecting to be handed the crying egg! hesitantly, he took the togepi from the professor and slowly stood up while trying to cradle it in his arms. being the youngest in the family, he never had to deal with, well, younger siblings. he didn't know the first thing about getting a young anything to stop crying, to calm down, or... wait, he wouldn't have to change diapers, would he? he hoped not. otherwise, he was giving up on this an going straight back to mother. it wasn't worth it.
"there, there," he cooed in an attempt at calming the togepi, giving a slight repetitive bounce he had seen women on the streets use for crying or sleeping infants. really, that was all he had to go off of. trying to multitask, he shuffled over to the desk, careful that he didn't drop his, uh, his new child. he would have been better off with a flower sack with a smiley face drawn on it in marker.
oh, dear, he had to choose again? multiple choice was not his strongest area. he would have preferred open response or something. "ah, the..." red eyes scanned over the contents of both piles as he tried to make up his mind. what would be best? "pokemon food? yes, yes, the pokemon food and, er, antidote." poisoning was a pain in the butt, right? yes, it was. he could easily shield a weakened pokemon if he ran straight through, but poison would make things far too complicated.
let's see, what else would he need from the other pile? "the bedroll," he would need a place to rest, after all. "and, uh, trail rations." he supposed he would need to feed himself as well. wait, did the togepi need actual food or formula? the whole infant thing was getting to his head.

Quercus was certainly enjoying the confusion the man was experiencing, it was kind of charming in a way. He scrunched his face up a bit at his decisions though. "Hm.. Why don't you take to Go Go Goggles instead? Everything else seems fine though, so here ya go!" With that, the professor handed Yuuki the rest of the items.
"So," he pondered, "have you chosen any specific field of study? Maybe have some sort of long-term goal in mind? Stay in Port City or travel elsewhere? Just tell me a little about what you'd really like to do." The man fell back into a rolling chair, or rather, attempted to. He made contact with the floor first, but he quickly laughed it off and lifted himself into the seat, eyes wide and ready for his response.

the, uh, the go go goggles? oh, okay. he could work with that. um, what were those used for again? he would figure that out later. do they come in prescription? it would be absolutely wonderful if they did because he had a hard enough time keeping his glasses on his face. then again, he didn't like his glasses which was why he kept them in his bag, hidden from view. yuuki blinked in remembrance, having completely forgotten that the world was blurry. how the hell had he even figured out which items to pick? then again, some of them were pretty obvious by their shapes.
he adjusted the togepi in his arms, opened his mouth to speak before the professor completely missed his chair. "a-are you alright?" he leaned over the desk to try and see, red eyes wide with worry as he clutched the small pokemon to his chest. at least the togepi had started to calm down. perhaps the man just scared her into forgetting her tears. he took a step away from the desk, glancing over the professor as he picked himself back up. he really should be more careful. chairs were dangerous; they worked for the floors.
"i haven't decided just yet." he cleared his throat, trying to figure out a proper way of answering the professor's question. it was the honest truth. when he decided to become a researcher, he studied anything he could get his hands on. it didn't matter what it was; he wanted to know about it. "i was thinking of focusing on the pokemon of this world or the ecosystems, but... there's too much to choose from." and, he would much rather just know it all than to know a lot about one thing and little about another.
Never moment without laughter for this researcher! Quercus let out another chuckle, "Yes I'm perfectly alright, thank you." He tilted his head back and started stroking his long, feathery hair. With a couple of spin-arounds in his chair, he clicked his tongue and pedalled his way to a nearby shelf filled with scientific journals.
"Ecosystems huh?" He grabbed one with brown leather cover that had a leaf emblem on the front and flipped through a few pages. A few whispers slipped from under his lips as he skimmed the journal. "AH!" Oak exclaimed before slamming the book shut and placing it in a special bin on the desk. "I think, when you feel you're ready of course, you should head to New Pallet. There are some things I'd like to know about some of its surrounding areas, but I'll give you more details when you arrive. For now, just do what you can to prepare yourself." A grin crossed his face a final time, "You're about to discover a beautiful new world, I hope you're ready for it."

new pallet?
he wanted him to leave port city?
oh dear.
the muscles in his abdomen clenched, tightening into knots that he wished out just go away. he wasn't expecting to have to leave the city so soon. he just got a kid--er, pokemon--and he still needed to make sure his mother was absolutely okay with all of this. sure, she as the one making him do this, but... but he can't say no. not to her, not to someone expecting anything of him. the man gave a hesitant nod as he forced a smile to his face. "new pallet? got it." how long would it take him to prepare? chances are, he will take one step out of the city boundaries and turn tail the moment he saw a feral pokemon.
oh, but, just think of the opportunity to learn! and get your face bitten off. he rather liked his face the way it was. yuuki shifted on his feet before adjusting the togepi so she was cradled in one arm. the free hand reached out to grab all of his new items after slipping off his back and somehow managing to balance it on his hip while stuffing everything inside. now that he thought about it, he would have been better off setting the back on the desk to pack up everything. oh well. what was done was done.
"i am definitely not ready for it, and I guess i will, uh, call you or something if i make it to new pallet in one peace." with that, he dipped in his towards the professor in farewell before turning around, draping his bag back over his shoulder as he headed for the door. getting a starter was enough of an adventure for the day. he needed a nap.
