Well, here it was. The Pokemon Lab.
The mercenary escort had left Amber with little in the way of money in her pocket but, to her, it was money well spent. Nothing quite like taking that winding road that was peppered with tunnel openings and territorial pokemon to remind her exactly how dangerous her new career was going to be. But that was the point, she supposed. She was going to face the dangers to try to learn how to keep everyone else safe from them. The old world had been thoroughly explored and documented, but her beloved new world was a mystery to solve.
Amber sighed and shook her head, chuckling at how she was just standing there staring at the door, as if it would open of its own accord and her perfect starter pokemon would just trot right out and meet her. Come on, Amber, got to start putting one foot in the front of the other, or you'll never get there.
She opened the door and stepped inside, and paused to look around at the room with a smile. Fancy on the outside and inside. Amber had never been here before. She was a New Pallet girl, all about her independent studying rather than the round up of kids for trainer school Port City had. Her heart had leaped like it had never had before when she'd found out that they'd accepted her application to be a researcher.
Pretty good for a silly farm girl, huh? she thought with a faint smirk, though it turned to a friendly smile as she tipped her hat at the desk attendant. She hoped that the Professor remembered her appointment, but she was content to wait if need be. He was surely very busy.
Amber honestly couldn't imagine working in a place like this. She'd go stir crazy within a month. Well, maybe she wasn't giving herself enough credit, since she was sure the research itself would hold her interest for quite a while, but all the same, it wasn't her favourite environment. Give her an open sky and room to run, and she was happy.

The attendant directed her to a large room where Amber found the professor pouring over three separate books, one of which was actually more of a three-ring binder with various hand-scrawled research notes. Whether the writing was the professor's or not was another question, but it was a miracle he could read it even if he'd been the one to write it. He muttered to himself for a good forty-five seconds after Amber entered, ignoring any attempts to gain his attention until suddenly he snapped to it. "Oh! Amethyst, right? Come right this way! I found several Pokemon I think you might be interested in this morning!" Leading her to the other side of the room where shelves lined with PokeBalls hung from the wall, he took five and let them all loose. "First up is Meditite. It's a Pokemon that's got a great mixture of brains and brawn, just like you. It can help you with your research and defend it too!
"But of course, I know you really don't like to fight. So the next option is the most defensive Pokemon currently known, Shuckle! It can take hits almost endlessly, but isn't much in the attack or speed departments.
"For a different sort of taking hits, there's Wynaut. ..Although.. it actually needs a fair bit of training before it can even do that effectively, but once it gets there you can turn nearly any opponent's strength against it. Your resume said you were exceedingly patient, which is just what this Pokemon needs to bring out its potential.
"Of course, an alternative to taking hits is to never let the opponent make contact. This particular Fletchling is extra small-" He wasn't kidding. It stood about six inches tall. "-but just as quick as any of its kind. I know you grew up with Pidgey, so I wasn't sure if a bird would seem a familiar comfort or kind of boring, but I assure you this one's a little spitfire. Possibly a bit aggressive for you, even, but it just depends what you want.
At any rate, last up is Happiny, because.. Well, the anti-thesis of fighting, healing, seemed like something you might enjoy." He paused, hesitated just a moment, then added, "And tradition."Without awaiting her response, he ducked back behind his desk and retrieved a bag, clearing a spot to dump it out to display the contents within. In the pile was an X-Gear (complete with Holo Chip), a Data Log, a Berry Sack, a small Shovel (..how had that fit in the bag?), a Fishing Pole with a few hooks fit snuggly on the handle but no line, and a small pamphlet. "You can also take two of these. Except this." He removed the pamphlet and held it out to her. "This has a few extra starter options. The ones currently out of stock are marked." The moment Amber saw the professor, her curiosity was piqued. It took all of her self-control to remain just inside of the doorway rather than wandering closer to see if she could either make out something coherent from his muttering or look over his shoulder to try to make out something that was on the hand-written pages. If she could deal with her big sister's terrible writing, she could probably decipher a word or two of that stuff. She started to mess with her long braid and look at the ceiling in an attempt to distract herself, but immediately snapped to attention when the Professor spoke.
Amethyst? Amber didn't quite manage to stifle the snort of laughter when she heard that. Being called by the wrong name was inevitable in the Joy family, as everyone was always mistaken for their sibling, cousin, or even mother. It didn't happen as often to her, with her somewhat atypical appearance, but one would be surprised how often someone could make the mistake from behind or at a distance, particularly when she had her hair down. Rhona's husband, then just her boyfriend, had made that mistake once, before Amber had had her growth spurt, and put his arm around her without checking first that he had the right sister. He still turned bright red when the family brought that little story up, which they did frequently, specifically because of that reaction.
Just plain messing up her name was a new one, though. "Name's Amber, actually, Professor," she commented, the amused smile on her lips and voice tone far from offended as she gave a little tip of her hat she doubted he noticed. "Amethyst's an awfully pretty name, though," she added, honestly. If it had been a cute girl saying it, she may have even said something goofy like 'but you can call me that if you want.'
However, today was not a day for small talk--Did Professor Oak ever have days for small talk?--but a day for pokemon. She'd been both looking forward to this moment and just a little bit dreading it. On one hand, this was the start of her new career, as from now on she'd have a research assistant. That's exactly what she saw her pokemon as being, too. Not a pet or bodyguard, but an assistant.
On the other hand, no matter her decision, there would be four broken hearts when this was over.
And what a selection of pokemon she was being offered, too. She nodded slightly at each of the descriptions and the professor's rationale behind them. Her pale eyes ran over each in turn, studying them, but she absorbed every word. When he hesitated and added the comment on tradition, her eyes flicked in his direction, her lips twitching back into that little, amused smile of hers. Tradition. Right. Because she was clearly the most traditional Joy in the world. Still, she got what he meant.
She glanced at the items, though she already mentally picked out what she wanted before he'd even handed her the pamphlet. She didn't really look at it just yet, except for a quick glance to make note of the fact that Chikorita were out of stock. Shame. She really liked those. Then her eyes were back on the five pokemon before her, her ice-coloured eyes almost seeming to be boring holes in them as she analyzed them one by one.
Meditite, the Meditate pokemon, she thought as she stared, digging up all the information she could remember about them from her reading. She'd never laid eyes on one before, only knowing them from her old books. Has both psychic and fighting types, evolves into Medicham at level 8. Has a known Mega-Evolution. Resistant to fighting and rock attacks, vulnerable to fairy, flying, and ghost attacks. Highest stat is speed, followed by both defense stats, followed by both attack stats. Primarily learns fighting-type physical attacks by level-up, and also learns Detect, Hidden Power, Mind Reader, Feint, Acupressure...Don't they learn Recover at level ten, too?
Meditite and medicham were both a little oddball-looking, but she was hardly bothered by that. In fact, it was actually kind of appealing. And the professor was right. Brain and brawn was definitely similar to her. But, something was nagging at the back of her mind, making her wonder if a fighting type was really the best choice. They were known for their tireless training, and while the meditite line were more oriented to constant meditating than constant weight-lifting or sparring, she needed to be absolutely sure her assistant would be able to properly dedicate themselves to the research, rather than worrying about their training schedule. Because the professor was also right in the fact that she didn't like fighting.
Amber shook her head a little, trying to dash away the negative thoughts--only later would it occur to her that it looked a bit like she was shaking her head at the meditite itself--and looked at the next pokemon. Shuckle, the Mold pokemon. Has both rock and bug types, and doesn't evolve. Is resistant to normal and poison attacks, and vulnerable to rock, steel, and water attacks. Highest stats are an extremely high defense and special defense, leaving abysmal speed and attacking stats. Learns primarily physical attacks by level up, and also learns Encore, Safeguard, Rest, Gastro Acid...And, Power Trick, which, if it uses that, will turn the poor thing into tissue paper...
The shuckle was really kind of cute, in a goofy sort of way. Right up her alley. Part of her wanted to kneel down and give it a little scratch under the chin. The high defenses were a bit of a relief, since she hated the idea of her partner being hurt and it would take a lot to hurt a shuckle. Not to mention, there was the attribute that was apparently their claim to fame in the old world, that being the fact that berries left inside their hollow shell would eventually liquify and take on new, often useful, properties. Her curiosity was very much piqued, since she couldn't remember if any research had been done on how the berries of the new world be affected by this. But, like before, she found herself frowning; yes, Shuckle were amazingly defensive, but with no real way to subdue an opponent or the speed to escape it, them getting hurt still seemed inevitable, just something that would take longer, and Rest was a double-edged sword as far as healing moves went.
On to the next one. Wyanut, the Bright pokemon. Pure psychic, and evolves into Wobbuffet at level 3. Resistant to fighting and psychic attacks, and vulnerable to bug, ghost, and dark attacks. Stats focused on the defensive, and entire level-up moveset consists of Splash, Charm, Encore, Counter, Mirror Coat, Safeguard, and Destiny Bond.
You had to respect a pokemon that never attacked first, and the idea of just scooping up that little Wynaut and giving it a hug was tempting, but Amber had to admit that this one seemed like an immediate 'no' to her. She understood the thought behind it, and appreciated the compliment on her patience, but she knew how Counter and Mirror Coat worked. The user had to be attacked, and then they hurt the opponent for double the pain. And then there was Destiny Bond, which just made her distinctly uncomfortable. Not exactly her style. A shame because, to be honest, they were some of her favourite psychic pokemon, even if she didn't think she was compatible with them.
Now for the winged pokemon in the room. Fletchling, the Tiny Robin pokemon. Extra tiny, in this case. Has both normal and flying types, taking on fire and flying types instead when it evolves into Fletchinder at level 4 and then Talonflame at level 7. Evolved form is immune to ground attacks, double-resistant to bug and grass attacks, resistant to fairy, fighting, fire, and steel attacks, vulnerable to electric and water attacks, and double-vulnerable to rock attacks. Highest stat is speed, followed by physical attacking power, with special attacking power and both defenses not far behind it. Learns mostly physical attacks by level-up, including Steel Wing, along with Agility, Roost, and Tailwind.
Well, the professor was very much right about the little bird being all about speed, and she was certainly more nostalgic than anything at the sight of the pokemon, as the type change on evolution made it just different enough from a pidgey to capture her interest. He was, however, right that the aggression they were known for would probably put them at odds more often than not, and their movepool didn't offer her much. Getting it to its final form at level seven would a very long process with her aversion to combat; she certainly the patience, but would the fletchling? This one was a 'no,' too.
And the last one. She didn't need to do much searching in her mind for information on the happiny, though it would probably shock the professor that she actually didn't have much experience with them. He aunts, cousins, and even sister had chansey, but not happiny. That was because breeding, and evolving, happiny required specific items, while chansey were the default offspring and only required a strong emotional bond to become blissey. The resources to breed happiny, she could probably find by asking around between her relatives, but evolution? She didn't know of anywhere that Oval Stones, or some sort of equivalent, could be found, and happiny only learned a grand total of five moves total, stopping entirely after level three: Pound, Charm, Copycat, Refresh, and Sweet Kiss.
Again, Amber had the patience to wait until either she or someone else discovered something, but how fair was it to the happiny, really, to take the little thing into danger when she had no way of evolving them to their full potential, especially when their most potent healing moves were learned in the chansey stage?
So, there were three 'no,' and two 'maybe.' Amber sighed and resisted the urge to pull her hat down so that the brim hid her face as she made a noise of frustration. Stupid dang analytical mind, finding everything wrong with... "Mus' be nice for 'em mercs, who can take two," she mumbled. That would take a little of the pressure off, at least, since two pokemon could cover each other's weaknesses.
Her eyes flicked to the pamphlet, and this time her thoughts jumped from species to species as she considered them. Bulbasaur was geared toward special attacking and defense and could learn Sleep Powder, Sweet Scent, and Synthesis. Squirtle were geared toward the defense stats and could learn Protect through level-up. Mudkip's only real weak point was speed and it could learn Protect, too. Turtwig was good with physical attacking and defense and could learn Synthesis. Fennekin became psychic types upon reaching the Delphox stage, were good with special attacking and defense along with speed, and could learn both Light Screen and Magic Room. Froakie were about special attacking and speed, and learned Substitute and Double Team...
Limbkin. Pyroll. Aquaera. Amber blinked and looked at the three pokemon at the end of the list. She knew about as much about those three as anyone who didn't actually work in the Lab did, meaning very little. Their types at their basic stage, some generalities about their stats, and few behavioural quirks, but next to nothing about moves and absolutely nothing about evolutionary stages besides when they could be expected to reach them. Everything was all hush hush. Taking one of those was a gamble, to be sure.
But so was taking this job, though, wasn't it? Leaving the nice, safe pidgey ranch to become a researcher. She could make a big, important discovery that would change their way of life, could achieve her dreams, or she could never get much of anywhere and find nothing. Or a feral pokemon could kill her. That was something, too. This job could actually kill her, since she was specifically not staying in a nice, safe laboratory. So what was one more gamble?
She looked at the meditite, then the shuckle, then the pamphlet. Limbkin were...physical attackers and speedy, right? Probably not her thing, even though it was a bird. Pyroll...were physically defensive, but not so good on the special defense, and it seemed that fire types didn't tend to learn moves she could make use of, though that certainly wasn't a rule, since the fennekin line had some nice ones. Aquaera...best stat was special attacking, worst speed, but nothing was actually all that bad. Nice and well-rounded. The thing she actually remembered most about them was the fact that apparently they could summon little rainclouds when they were very sad.
She looked at the meditie again, then again at the shuckle, then locked her eyes on the image of the little otter...penguin...iguana...thing. Well, it wouldn't hurt to meet the little fellow in person, would it? "I'll take the X-Gear and Data Log, fer items, I think. As fer my pokemon...Could I take a look at the Aquaera you've got? I've never met one of 'em before, and they intrigue me a lil bit, but I'd rather see 'em in person before I make a choice, y'know?"
Maybe Amber was stalling. A little bit. Possibly. But something in her gut said to check out this one, and, every once in a while, there was a time when you should just plain listen to your gut.

The professor nodded. "Of course!" He then sat there for a few moments before seeming to remember that he'd have to go retrieve said Pokemon, then scrambling to his feet as if trying to pretend the lapse didn't happen. "Go ahead and bag your items," he told her as he sifted through a little box of marked PokeBalls.
Returning with one marked with a small water drop icon, he took his seat and released the Pokemon, who appeared with a somewhat dramatic flair. Had to make a good impression, after all! The Aquaera gave its 'future trainer' a bow, which was quite amusing with it's floppy flippers, then just stood patiently and smiled up with a hopeful smile.
Four of the other five Pokemon seemed to think little of this, although Fletchling cocked its head a little bit, but Meditite huffed a little. She-- it was clearly female by the ears-- understood the role of Pokemon in the lab, but that such a little show-off wanted to just swoop in like that irked her a bit. She stepped up a bit, emulating the bow, but leering at Aquaera afterward rather than smiling at Amber.
Aquaera took notice, frowning at Meditite in turn. Aquaera then mumbled something as it looked away again, which seemed to get a pretty appalled reaction from Meditite, who began just a syllable or two of a heated rant before deciding Aquaera wasn't worth it and taking a deep breath instead. Meditation. She needed about two years of meditation. Some Pokemon, she swore...
Returning its attention to Amber, Aquaera gave the biggest sparkliest set of eyes it could muster.
"Since you're the first trainer in a while to show some interest in one of these guys," the professor butted in, "I'll go ahead and tell you the next handful of moves that it should learn within a few battles. Those would be Bubble, Water Sport, and Sweet Kiss."

Amber smiled and took the X-Gear and Data Log to slip in her backpack as the professor fetched the aquaera's pokeball, not commenting at all on the lapse and fighting the urge to chuckle a little at it. That would be rude, and not very fair. Everyone had moments like that. She instead occupied herself with the thought that she'd have to fiddle a bit with X-Gear later, since she wasn't the most tech-savvy person in the world. She had a second-cousin who ran an Inn in this city, though, so if all else failed she could make a pair of puppy-dog eyes at Abbie and she'd probably help her muddle through it.
Speaking of puppy-dog eyes, Amber very nearly lost the control that had kept her from petting the shuckle and wynaut when the aquaera appeared and gave that little bow and sweet smile. So cute! She kept composure, barely, but it took a little work. Though, the feeling passed quickly when the meditite stood up and saw fit to mimic and glare at the newcomer, which made her frown. The little exchange afterward just deepened it, though the fact that the meditite took a deep breath and backed off was a good thing, if only because Amber would feel the need to intervene if that hadn't have been the case.
She perked up at the professor's next words, turning her attention away from the big, sparkly eyes for a moment. A downright eager expression came across her face as she was given this precious new information. "Sweet Kiss, huh?" That could be useful. So could Water Sport. Something that could take the edge of an opponent's attacks, even if it was of a type that Aquaera was already resistant to, was a plus.
Amber looked at the aquaera, smiling slightly. Sooooo cute! Then she looked at the original five, gaze lingering on the meditite in particular with a thoughtful frown. "All right. I get that this is probably really important to y'all, getting a chance to be picked and all. S'got to be hard to do all that waitin' for someone to come 'long who might suit you. I'm a sympathetic girl, if all that talk the professor's done of me not likin' fightin' much hasn't made that obvious, so I don't like the fact that me makin' a choice means the rest of y'all get left behind. I'd take the whole bunch of you home with me if I could, but I gotta do this by the rules, an', let's face it, some of you may not be happy f'you come with me, an' the big thing I want is my partner bein' happy."
She crossed her arms. "So, let's start by telling y'all about me." She took off her hat and held it in both hands, running her pale eyes over the assembled pokemon. "I'm Amber Joy, an' my passion research-wise is, first off, linguistics. I can't understand a word y'all say, an' that's always bothered me a lot. When I was kid, I tried to teach my Ma and Pa's pidgey to speak English. Didn't work too well, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean I'm givin' up on that one. After that, my big goal is that I want to discover new things. Species--" Her eyes flicked in the aquaera's direction again. "--moves, items that y'all can use to heal, boost yer power, or even--" Her eyes flicked toward the happiny. "Evolve, in ways like the old world or in new ways we don't know 'bout yet."
She toyed with the hat in her hands. "Obviously, goin' out and findin' these things means brushes with ferals, but I'd rather watch 'em than fight 'em. They're awfully different from you domestics, and I like to study how they act. I'm not sayin' you won't train, but we're not gonna battle everythin' we find, or even everythin' that tries to start a fight with us."
Amber knelt down, and set her hat back on her head. "If any of that bothers any of y'all, if any of y'all think you'd be frustrated or bored by helpin' me, I'd rather you let me know now, rather than tell me what you think I wanna hear in the hopes I'll still pick you. Trus' me, every last one of y'all deserves a trainer you'd get 'long with."
She then smiled and held out her hand, palm up, for any of them to approach and touch with hand, foot, wing, flipper, or ear. "But I do hope at least one of y'all think you'd have a good time. You'll be one of the first to see a lot of amazin' stuff, if we're lucky." Even the ones she'd mentally ticked off as 'no,' she wanted to know their opinion. If they had the enthusiasm, maybe the drawbacks of their respective species wouldn't matter as much, though her mind was still focused pretty heavily on the shuckle, meditite, and aquaera. Though, that earlier display from the meditite made her wonder if there would be problems in the future.

Of all things, the Happiny seemed very disheartened by the revelation that Amber had little interest in fighting, and walked away rather dejectedly to put herself back in her PokéBall. Even the professor seemed a bit surprised by that one. "..Huh. I'll.. I'll make a note of that."
The other Pokémon all seemed more willing to hear her out and contemplated the words. Shuckle brought up two tentacles and tilted it's head in a manner that seemed to resemble a shrug, trying to indicate that it was fine either way. It wasn't exactly enthusiasm, but a go-with-the-flow attitude could be good too.
Wynaut tapped itself on the chest with one prehensile ear and saluted Amber with the other, indicating it would be willing to work to her standards, or at least the best of its ability.
Fletchling looked starstruck, chirping loudly and jumping and flitting around in little circles. Naturally the bird would be enticed by the idea of lots of travel and seeing new sights. Once it calmed enough to make more rational movements, it flitted up and landed on Amber's arm.
Meanwhile, Aquaera and Meditite each looked more contemplative. "Aq wa ware, raweh wahq!" the water type exclaimed. Whether it was trying to say something or perhaps show off a linquistic range was entirely unclear, however.
"Medi.." Meditite mumbled. She motioned to herself, then held a hand level to the ground and slowly raised it up higher. She then tapped the side of her head a few times, then pointed to Amber's head or face, then back to herself, then back to Amber again.
Both of the little bipedal Pokemon reached out the put a hand (or flipper) in Amber's, only to bump into each other and recoil, frowning at each other. Of course, Fletchling had beat them both and seemed oblivious to the conflict behind it.

Amber didn't like to see that dejected look, but she couldn't help but smile a little at the professor's comment. "Can't always judge a book by its cover," she said, not at all offended. That's why she'd explained herself, after all. And she really hoped that happiny found herself a trainer who gave her the opportunities to battle she desired, and who made her so happy she jumped straight to the blissey stage.
The shrug from the shuckle was a nice sign, but she'd rather see genuine enthusiasm. Like from the fletchling, who surprised her with all the gleeful circles, though she wondered how easily the bird would be willing to sit still and observe something with that kind of energy. All the same, she couldn't help an affectionate smile as the bird perched on her arm.
That left the other two, who looked to be thinking it over seriously. The exclamation from the aquaera again made her wish very much she could speak to pokemon, and the meditite...That was a good point. Assuming those gestures were referring to the potential for development of a level of psychic power that would result her being able to telepathically communicate with Amber, of course. She'd certainly read about powerful psychic pokemon who had been capable of such things, and while she'd never heard of a medicham specifically being one of those, she didn't see any reason how they couldn't.
And then she had to watch them reach out, brush against each other, and then look at each other like that. Amber frowned at them, eyes flicking from one to the other. She then reached over with her other hand to gently stroke the tiny fletching with her fingertip. "Yer a sweet one, aren't you?" she said softly, intentionally stalling a bit for time.
Wish this didn't have to be so hard... she thought, not for the first time today. Even if she were allowed two like a mercenary, the two currently at the top of her list clearly didn't like one another much. She really didn't like this animosity, but she was more inclined to blame one of these two than the other for it.
Amber sighed. This was going to be unpleasant, but it was inevitable, and she couldn't take up the professor's whole afternoon waffling over this. "All right, I think I've made my decision." She looked at the little bird and gave him another gentle pet. "Yer a lovely fella, an' I adore that energy of yers, but I dunno how well you and me are gonna work as a team." She then held up her finger, hopefully before he could get too upset. "Now, before you jump to conclusions, I'm not sayin' yer too small. Far from it, sugar. After all, yer gonna be a talonflame someday, an' they're huge, even the lil ones. But, you need someone who's gonna help you burn bright, really give you a chance to shine an', much as I love birds...You might be grounded more than you like with me, even with all the explorin', an' I don't want you to launch into somethin' with so much excitement an' then be disappointed with it."
Just please don't peck me, she mentally added, with a weak smile. Not that she necessarily expected the fletchling to, or would do little more than brush it off as an understandable reaction if it happened, but she couldn't help thinking it. It really hurt crushing the little guy like this, but better now than later, right?
Amber then looked straight at the meditite. "Now you, you make a really good point. Telepathy's certainly a good way to communicate, with some advantages over verbal speech, even, an' with the right trainin', I bet you'd be pretty good at it. An' the professor made a good point in pickin' you in the first place, too. We're alike in a lot of ways. Physically strong, but also smart. I don't doubt you'd make a good assistant. However..." There was a distinct frown on her face now. "I'm not sure if I like what I've seen of yer attitude. Not lettin' a conflict escalate, that's a virtue, an' that, I admire. Startin' the dang thing an' then havin' the audacity to be surprised when somebody retaliates, that's a problem, an' it says somethin' 'bout yer character that I think would make us clash in the long run."
What it said, to her, was a feeling of superiority, which was one of the things Amber simply didn't have patience for. Now, she didn't know what the aquaera had muttered before, but at that point it had been provoked, and she was more willing to offer the benefit of the doubt. Now, under the majority of circumstances, she may have taken the meditite anyway, albeit with a warning that she better get that attitude in check or, dislike of fighting and difference in physical strength between a human and fighting type be damned, Amber would whoop her butt for it.
However, there was another pokemon in this room who wanted to come with her. Amber shifted and held her hand toward the aquaera specifically this time. "Now, I don't know much about yer species, with the professor bein' all hush hush 'bout it, so I'm gonna be learnin' as I go, but I've got a good feelin' here, and if yer really willin' to commit to helpin' me...I'd be happy to take you with me."

Wynaut held his salute, waiting and waiting for acknowledgement that never came, before slowly slinking into a more slumped position and just kind of sneaking off, presumably without Amber's notice. Shuckle meanwhile hadn't especially expected to be the choice of the day and was very okay with that. It knew it was a very rare taste and was entirely content to wait for the perfect trainer who was ecstatic to find it available.
Fletchling, as opposed to crushed, seemed mildly disappointed for a moment, but then entirely understanding. It waited for Amber to finish talking so as not to interrupt her, then fluttered up onto her shoulder and nuzzled her cheek before taking off, doing a loop in the air, and diving right into its PokéBall.
At the claim that she'd 'started it' Meditite looked not only offended but legitimately shocked, and for just a moment she looked like she'd go off on a rant, but then pursed her lips. She held up a hand in an 'it's not worth it' gesture, shook her head, then rubbed her temples a bit in a vain attempt to relax them as she found her Ball again. Rather than enter it, she picked it up and took it with her as she left the room, presumably looking for some place to meditate. "Er-- don't go far!" the professor called after her. She sighed heavily. She may have just lost out on what could have been an ideal partner for her, but at least she'd feel so much better with that flashy arrogant little feralspawn was gone.
About the time Fletchling was leaving Amber's shoulder, Aquaera threw its flippers around Amber in an excited hug.
"I'm no communications expert, but I think that's a yes!" Quercus chimed. He found six empty PokéBalls and offered to Amber. "And take these to get you started."

While the person writing this quietly says 'oops' Amber actually did catch sight of the Wynaut sneaking off and felt a tiny punch to her gut. She opened her mouth to say something, but too little, too late. Should've said something to that one first, should've said something to that one first, should've...That was going to haunt her a for while. The meditite storming off didn't make her feel much better (not that she could necessarily blame her for being upset by what Amber had just said; she'd set her internal tap to 'brutally honest' and just let the words flow out of her), but the snuggle from the fletchling and hug from her chosen starter made it a little bit better. She took the six pokeballs with a small smile, as soon as she was released from the embrace, and tucked them away in her bag.
"Thanks a lot, professor, fer all of this." She then walked over to the shuckle, knelt down, and gave it a small scratch under its chin. "Sorry I didn't pick you, sugar, but you should have someone who can make use of yer full potential. An', maybe, you could tell your buddy Wynaut I'm sorry, too? Disappeared too fast for me to say what I wanted to, 'bout how I don't know how well I could utilize those skills of theirs an' they should have a trainer who can." Yep, that was going to haunt her. She was going to see sad wynaut in her dreams tonight and wake up in a terrible mood the next morning.
Amber sighed and shook her head as she stood up, then put on a smile again and gestured for her new companion to follow her. "Come on, lil lady. A bit of shopping an' then, next stop, New Pallet." She tipped her hat a bit toward Professor Oak. "I'll see you later, professor. Thanks again."
As they were headed out the door, Amber suddenly had a thought, and she smiled even more brightly down at her starter. "...How d'you like the name Winona?"

Shuckle tilted its head, but nodded. Whether it would actually see Wynaut again before forgetting was another issue, but if it would make the nice trainer feel better sure, it could try to take care of that.
"Good luck, Ambrelle!" the professor called after her before going back to his notes.
At the question, the Aquaera brought a flipper to her chin and contemplated it, 'scratching' a bit right around the place where her dewlap started. "Wheh.. Wera!" Winona nodded, then stopped. What had Amber been talking about earlier.... "W... Werahra!" ..Close enough right?
