~Strange sounds have been heard outside of New Pallet, The Ambassador urges trainers to be ready in case of an attack~
Summer is kicking in Port City! The temperature averages about 78°F (25°C) with a bit more rain than usual. Thunderstorms pop up every once in awhile, but overall, the sun is shining, the water's warm, and it looks like it'll be a great summer for the colonies.

WHEN THE
lights fade out, all the sinners crawl...
Dinaer woke to Kiv's yowling. Whatever was bothering the cat, it probably wasn't enough to warrant the cat screaming at... seven in the morning. Din took a breath, trying to stay calm, moving to shower and get dressed. He had hoped the thing would be finished when he went downstairs. He was wrong. Kiv circled once more around Val's chair, then heading straight to Din to smash into his legs. "Mornin', Kiv. What is it you want from me? You hungry?" He asked, stroking Kiv's mane a bit. Kiv meowed loudly, and Din walked towards the kitchen, pulling down a bag of food for the creature. Kiv sniffed at the bowl of food, then looking blandly at Din. Clearly, he wasn't hungry.
Din sighed. He'd gotten home late, and now Kiv had woken him up early. He was too tired for this. "What, Kiv. I don't speak luxray. What do you want." The cat whined, somehow, butting his head against Dinaer's legs again, moving to the front door. Din rolled his eyes, and opted to check on Val first. He wasn't really sure what he wanted to have changed. Val was sitting in his chair, staring at the tv. Drinking. Exactly like he had been last night. "... Val. Did you get to sleep last night?" He waited a moment for response, and got none. Some commercial was flashing on the screen. "Did you get yourself breakfast...?" Now, at least, there was a response, though it was just a quiet grunt. Din fought back a biting response. He turned sharply instead, pulling a half-eaten meal from the fridge, and setting it on the counter. Kiv would no doubt harass Val about it all day. Hopefully, that would mean he'd eat.
With another sigh, he finally went to go see what Kiv was getting worked up over. Din opened the door, finding not a person, but a folded letter on the welcome mat. A wave of disgust overcame him, and Kiv hissed irritably at the paper, but Din picked it up. He had no other choice.
Dinaer! It's your lucky day today, isn't it? Based on your recent performance, I have set up an appointment for you with Mr. R. It's at eight o'clock sharp. Don't be late! Don't disappoint me. Habreena
Dinaer aggressively crumpled the letter, hurling it forcefully into the trashcan. Horrid woman! But she was the reason they had money for food at all. And she knew where he lived. Where Val lived. Din (with a great deal of self-restraint) managed to not slam the door, glancing at the clock. Seven fifty. He wasn't sure what he expected. "Val! I'm going to work- Eat something!" He shouted, grabbing his bag and heading out. Kiv- Take care of him. Din didn't have to say it. Kiv knew regardless- The thing was smarter than he rightfully should be.
Din quickly walked to the imposing metal building, curing Habreena. How was he supposed to prepare for a meeting he didn't know about?! He looked... fine, probably, though he didn't have much else to wear regardless. He did pause before barging right in, though, running his fingers through his hair, to seem like he did actually try. Thankfully, a quick glance inside said Habreena wasn't there, so that was good. He glanced backwards, towards the marketplace. It wasn't too late to go back home... and what? Incur not just Habreena's wrath, but also that of Mr. R?
Din opened the door, quietly stepping inside and moving towards the desk. "Good morning, sir." He said quietly. Officially. "I am Dinaer Auvryndar. Lady Habreena said she set up an appointment for me." He hesitated, as if unsure to sit down or not, settling for just waiting for further instruction.

As he entered the building, Dinaer would see a single small room. It was made to seem even smaller by the countless shelves that lined the walls, filled with all sorts of items, artifacts, and trophies. Honestly, it probably looked like the office of a hoarder, but it still had a very prominent charm to it. In the middle of the room sat a large desk, behind which was a well-dressed man sitting in a rather expensive looking office chair. Behind the man, the back wall of the room was made up of a colored glass window, showing off a very prominent, red 'R.' If nothing else, it would be impossible to think you were in the wrong place.
Mr. R didn't seem to notice Dinaer at first, as he was distracted with his paperwork, shuffling through all sorts of forms and charts, having seemingly misplaced the paper he needed. Nearby, beside the piles of paper, sat five labelled Pokeballs. As Dinaer spoke, however, the man looked up from the work and gave a charming smile. "Dinaer, is it? I am Mr. R, though please simply call me R. The 'Sir' is very unnecessary." He spoke in introduction, standing from his desk and holding out a hand to shake. Once introductions were out of the way, he gestured for Dinaer to sit down in the chair across from the desk.
"Down to business, then." He spoke, taking a moment to straighten out the papers covering his desk before turning Dinaer's attention to the five Pokeballs. "Here are you choices."
"Each one was carefully chosen to assist you in your job. As you can see, there's not nearly enough room in here to release them, but I will tell you about each to help you decide. As a Mercenary, you are allowed to choose two." The mentor continued, then gesturing to the first Pokeball. The label showed a giraffe-like Pokemon with a strange tail. "First is a Girafarig. Girafarig are a very sturdy and confident Psychic type Pokemon. They may not seem like much, but are a force to be reckoned with when scorned. Girafarig also have a second 'head' that is known to sense and warn the Pokemon of danger, making a surprise ambush a very unlikely thing. Just be careful not to stand too close to the second head. If you smell like food, it will bite."
As Mr. R finished his bit on the Girafarig, he moved to the next Pokeball. "Next is Zangoose. This is an extremely tenacious Pokemon with the power to show for it. Fighting is second nature to this Pokemon, and it will never back down from a challenge. The only issue might be their instinctive rivalry against another Pokemon known as Seviper. This is merely a heads up, as once a Zangoose and Seviper meet, there is no keeping them from battle. Still, Zangoose make for great companions in your line of work, with their natural fighting spirit." He finished, pausing to ponder if there was anything else to add before moving on.
"This is an Espurr. A rather unsettling Pokemon to some, Espurr are known for their thousand yard stare. Espurr have an extremely powerful psychic ability, the source of which they keep hidden beneath their folded ears. It does not have full control over this power, but I believe it could still come in very useful as your companion." Mr. R spoke, nodding towards the ball. Espurr was a difficult one for many trainers to grow accustom to, but it was no doubt a powerful one.
"Last are Mawile and Gastly. Mawile is a Steel/Fairy type which, similar to the Girafarig, has two mouths. Their second mouth is a large set of jaws that protrudes from the back of their head and is made of steel. These jaws are very dangerous and the Mawile will usually have its back turned to an enemy in order to use them. A Mawile's main body typically looks rather non-menacing. This Pokemon will use that to its full advantage to make an enemy drop its guard while it moves in for an attack. I can assure you, they are not one to be underestimated for their cute faces."
"And now, Gastly... As their name suggests, a Gastly is largely made up of a toxic gas. It is this Pokemon's natural ability to wrap enormous foes in this gas, causing them to faint. Gastly are often extremely mischievous Pokemon who will take any chance to pull a prank, harmless or not... They can be a pain to put up with, but also worth it as they make for very useful allies, especially as they evolve and become stronger."
"That's that, then. The choice is yours. Of course, if you would rather, you are also allowed to choose one or two of the original starters, instead."

WHEN THE
lights fade out, all the sinners crawl...
The small room and cramped shelves were rather familiar- But instead of bottles and cans, the things threatening to overflow the shelves seemed... impressive. Useful. The other man quickly noticed him, though, Dinaer returning the handshake with a nod, patiently listening to what the other had to say. His face was blank, impassive, and there was no indication he was going to abide by Mr. R's (relatively simple) request. "Sir" it would have to be.
When instructed, Din sat, but he was tense, almost on edge. Not slumped back into the seat like other, no, sitting near the edge, back straight, attentive. Ready, waiting. He was quiet through Mr. R's explanations, listening attentively. These were to be his companions... for a while, after all. Girafarig- He was explaining the pokemon so blandly, like it didn't rival a human in height, Not to mention that it had a second, animalistic head, filled entirely with fangs.
Zangose was next. A creature who's entire genetic disposition was for fighting. Ceaseless fighting, even, a war borne of a long-standing feud, the source of the hatred probably long, long forgotten. And those sickle-like fangs- Was that what was expected of him? Or was a creature like this what was awaiting him...? Din caught Mr. R's hesitation, frowning a bit at that. He had been planning to say something else- What? What had the older man withheld?
His attention was drawn, next, to the espurr. A small, feline pokemon. One that had a lot to live up to- Everyone who spoke about espurr spoke about the powerful capabilities it had in nearly the same breath. Did people think it had nothing going for it other than the powerful psychic organs? They were cute, he thought, when well cared for and trained right. Some weren't even given the chance. His eyes lingered on the espurr's pokeball, Din glancing up after a brief moment to continue listening to Mr. R.
Mawvile and Gastly. Two horrible, horrible creatures. Mwvile was a manipulator, and Gastly a trickster. Both just saw people as a means to an end. Both were either willing to hurt others in the process, or just uncaring. Din took a breath, trying to keep listening. It wasn't hard to see which pokemon Habreena had had a hand in "suggesting." If he was stuck with one of them.... What was he supposed to do?
Something Mr. R said caught his attention, the young man looking up from the collection of pokeballs. "Choose?" He repeated, giving Mr. R a rather baffled look. Hab- She- Hadn't she said?- "... I can choose?" Distrust flowed through him, suddenly, Din drawing back a minute amount. No- She had said it repeatedly. Partner pokemon were chosen for prospective "trainers" based on their merits and achievements. Would she lie about something like that?- What was the point if she was then going to turn him around and have him come choose anyway? ... Was Mr. R in on it? Was this all some sort of stupid game? "Let's make fun of Din, he doesn't know better?" Anger rippled through him- He was furious at Mr. R for being a part of this ploy, furious at Habreena for the letter she had left- furious at himself for being stupid enough to listen!

Mr. R blinked, taken aback by the trainer's sudden hostility and confusion. "Hmm.. I'm sorry, I don't understand what I've said to offend you to such an extend. But yes, this is your choice. My job as your mentor is simply to pick out a variety options that could suit well with you and make sure you are on the right path. It would be wrong for me to make such an important decision such as your first Pokemon companion in your stead, don't you think? I don't know where you've gotten these misconceptions, but I can assure you, there is nothing to get upset over." He spoke, explaining as calmly as he could in attempt to reel the trainer back in. "This is your choice. Please proceed."
This trainer's reaction was very worrying. He behaved as someone who'd just caught another in a lie. Perhaps he'd brought the misconceptions onto himself and was never corrected. Perhaps he simply had a nasty temper to go along with it. Perhaps this was something he'd have to discuss with him further at a later point.

WHEN THE
lights fade out, all the sinners crawl...
At Mr. R's words, Dinaer near-instantly looked down, as if cowed. "I apologize, sir." He said, quietly as he had spoken before, the fire gone from him. Some of what he had said was concerning- Make sure he was on the "right path?" Who's right path? His, or Habreena's? But... the rest of it seemed... sincere. There was no sickly-sweet croon behind the mentor's words. It was too much to hope for, but maybe... Maybe Mr. R really didn't know. "I apologize." Din repeated quietly, as if he had forgotten he said it earlier.
At the other's urging, Din turned his gaze to the small collection of pokeballs. It was obvious which ones Habreena would have him pick. Mawvile, most certainly, a not-so-subtle reminder of herself. A way to keep him in line. Maybe Gastly for the other. She had ghost pokemon, so it'd be another way to keep tabs on him. And the creature would surely harass him near constantly, and possibly even cause him harm. The zangoose wasn't even a veiled threat. It was a certainty of what would happen, a repeating of what she had written earlier. Don't disappoint me. But... But he had said it was a choice. His choice. Was it true? Mr. R seemed to believe what he was saying, at least. Could he really choose...?
He blinked, realizing the other man was probably waiting for an answer, so Din cleared his throat a bit awkwardly. "I... I'd like the Espurr, if I could." Din said, eyes then flicking back to Mr. R, hesitating a bit, a question forming on his face- Did he still get two? Did he deserve two? "And..." He said after a breath's pause. "The Girafarig. Sir." Habreena... she probably wouldn't approve of those choices. But he... Mr. R had said he had a choice- He. Not Habreena. But him.

Mr. R smiled as the trainer quickly calmed down, though he still seemed very confused. His attempts to find information on this particular boy in order to better choose starter options for him had run into several dead ends... As a result, he'd had to resort to sticking with a few of the Pokemon suggested by the woman who had set up the appointment for Dinaer. Of course, the suggestions from the woman were all very dark and violent Pokemon, which was very unsettling... So Mr. R had taken the liberty of switching a couple of them out with choices of own. If there was anything he could find on Dinaer, it was that he liked cats. And the Girafarig, well... That was the result of a very lengthy and in-depth thought process.
So while most of the choices weren't actually his own, a lot of thought was put into the ones that were. Due to this, it greatly pleased the mentor that the boy would choose only his options over the the darker ones. It was quite a relief after that outlash. This boy obvious had some things to work through, but that was what he was there to help him with, as his mentor. "Those are very nice choices." Mr. R spoke with a grin as he took the two Pokeballs from the lineup and held them towards Dinaer. "Espurr is known as the Restraint Pokemon. I believe that you two will be especially good for each other." He added with a good-natured nod.
"Hmm, now then, on to the next phase. Your item choices!" Mr. R continued, opening a draw on his desk and pulling out a few things to be given to Dinaer. "First we have your X-Gear. It is pre-programmed with my number, as well as a Holo Chip. Feel free to contact you anytime you're in need of assistance. Though, keep in mind that I do prefer texting." He started, then placing two chip like items on the desk in front of the trainer. "These are a Dex Chip and a Ability Chip. Please choose one." He added, then looking away as he fished some more things from the drawer. He soon added five empty Pokeballs to the pile.
"Once you've chosen the chip, you may also choose three trainer items that can be found in the Global Market for under 35₪." He continued, gesturing to the shelves that surrounded the room. "The floor is yours once more. I'm sure you'll choose wisely."
You are free to assign each of your Pokemon a name, gender, and ability. Please choose either the Dex Chip or the Ability Chip. Please choose three items that can be found in the Global Market for under 35₪.

WHEN THE
lights fade out, all the sinners crawl...
Mr. R was grinning when he handed the pokemon over, Din seeming a bit unsure at that as he took them. Why was he so glad? Was he like this to everyone? Was he just glad Dinaer was "starting his journey" or whatever... or was it something else? He stared at the pokeballs a moment, ruminating over something. Some of it was still wonder- It'd been explained, many times, but Dinaer still wasn't quite sure how pokemon managed to fit inside these things. Technology, and data storage, or something, and clearly it was possible, it was right in front of his face- He just didn't know how. Not that it really mattered- His life wouldn't really be impacted one way or the other. But.. But the pokemon inside... they were his pokemon. Of his choosing. Would they listen to him?
Would they like him?
Mr. R was talking again, Din trying to focus enough to listen. An X-Gear, with some kind of... attachment thing, or something, and some pokeballs. Those were... useful, he supposed. Mr. R was still talking- Dinaer was supposed to get more- Choose more? He hesitated, clearly unused to this. "... I think I'll take the ... Dex Chip." Din murmured, having taken a moment to remember what the thing was called. He slowly stood, then moving to look at the shelves Mr. R had gestured towards. Up close... They really were full. Why was there so much stuff in this one room? He settled for grabbing two potions, which were probably important... And a bag of food which... was also probably important.
He moved back to Mr. R's desk setting the two things down, as if for inspection. I'm sure you'll choose wisely. So there was a right and a wrong answer. So this was another test. Hopefully he- No. He made the right decision. Pokemon had to eat, if Kiv was any indication, and if one of them got hurt, they had to be helped. There wasn't another option.

A Dinaer finished making his choices, Mr. R nodded as he took note of what was brought over. "Wise choices, indeed." He spoke with a chuckle, then taking a few seconds to install the Dex Chip into the X-Gear for the trainer. "Alright then, you're almost ready to go. Only one more thing to go over been I send you on your way." He said, handing the device over.
"Your first mission. A hoard of Spinarak are getting ready to attack New Pallet. All trainers are to head over there immediately to help in fighting off the swarm. Well, I say 'immediately', but I'm sure you might want to take some time to get to know your new Pokemon first... There are Gogoat carriages ready to transport new trainers over in a timely manner. Make sure you're ready before you go." The mentor explained. He then paused for a moment, about to ask who the woman was that called to set up the appointment. He decided not to, idly shaking his head.
"..That's all, then. All of the luck to you and your Pokemon, Dinaer. Remember to text me if you ever need assistance."

WHEN THE

Dinaer waited patiently, obviously relaxing a bit as Mr. R praised his decision. For whatever reason, the older man's praise was... reassuring. "Thank you, sir." He said, taking the small electronic. He'd figure out how to properly use it... Later. At home. He didn't want to take up an more of Mr. R's time. He probably had more important things to attend to, like whatever he was doing before Dinaer inturrupted him.
New Pallet. It wasn't terribly far but... With all the feral pokemon, it certainly wasn't an easy walk. And Spinirak... a few had gotten in the house, before, They certainly weren't a big ordeal... But, well, maybe a swarm was. He didn't know how big a swarm was. Maybe if there were a hundred Spinirak, he'd be changing his tune. He certainly didn't want to be fighting a hundred Spinirak. "... I'll head there next."
He put the few items into his bag, picking up the pokeballs and, after a moment of looking at them, opting to carry them himself, instead. Din glanced up as Mr. R spoke again. "Thank you, sir." He repeated, reaching out to shake his mentor's hand once more. "I... I will."
