The shattering pokeball made Amber flinch and back up to try to avoid shrapnel. Well, crap. And brrr. She'd actually thought the big guy was kind of cute before, but that stare was creepy. At least her attempt had dissipated the strange Sand Attack. And at least he hadn't attacked her. That would have been the icing on the failure cake right there.
Winona, meanwhile, was giddy with triumph as both the cloud vanished and her attack hit its mark, sending them toppling to the ground. She didn't dare move until the sandshrew stopped moving, though, and then climbed off. That had been downright invigorating. In fact, she felt strong in the wake of the rush that came with defeating an opponent. Strong enough to be able to do something she hadn't been able to before.
The aquaera whirled on her other opponent. He hadn't attacked her directly, but he'd played his part in the fight all the same, which meant that this was justifiable self-defense, in her mind, and that hard hide no longer seemed like such an advantage, even with him staying curled up like that. With a deep intake of breath, Winona let out a stream of bubbles aimed right at the larger sandshrew.
Bubbles of doom!
Amber, meanwhile, eyed the fallen sandshrew. Well, capturing and studying both of them would give her some opportunity to see if that odd Sand Attack was common trait--she'd need more than just two specimens, obviously, but hopefully she'd be able to study the rest of the sandshrew she encountered a bit more peacefully--and the two of them did seem to be friends, if ones willing to be a bit violent with one another, so maybe it'd be easier on the big guy to take both him and his buddy so he wouldn't be all alone?
Not to mention, something big could come around and eat the little guy in this more vulnerable state, and Amber really didn't want to be responsible for that, part of the harsh reality of nature or no.
She fished out another pokeball and, as Winona went about trying to bubble the large one into unconsciousness, tossed it at at the smaller sandshrew.

Winona's bubbles smacked the larger shrew right out of its defensive stance. If there was one advantage of being mentally adept, it was having a strong Special Attack. Sandshrew rolled sideways, it ended up and its stomach, cringing in pain. A cough evacuated its mouth as it shakily tried to stand up. Unfortunately for him, that was hit was ample to take him down. With a sharp stare it began to charge its foe, only to trip and fall flat on its face again.
Meanwhile, the pokeball absorbed the other Sandshrew and shake, shake, ding quickly followed.

Amber let out a sigh of relief. Finally, things were going her way, or at least weren't getting worse. She knelt down to scoop up the pokeball and tuck it away, then fished out another one to toss at the sandshrew Winona had just knocked out. That had been far more violent than Amber had wanted it, but she had an interesting mutation to study, now, and, if she were going to be terribly honest with herself, having a ground type around to cover Winona's electric type weakness could be good, if one or both of the two fellows were at all receptive her training attempts.
Winona threw a flipper in the air in triumph, still feeling a rush. That had been fun! Oh, sure, she did maybe kinda-sorta feel bad, now that it was over, but, hey, they'd started it. And they were going to have a wonderful home with them, instead of being eaten or...having their heads put on pikes, or whatever it was that feral pokemon did with their enemies. Probably something awful like that. Didn't matter, because they were going to be fed regularly and cared for and never have to worry about that stuff again, so she and Amber were really doing them a favour, right? Right.
Wow, she felt really hyper right now. Was that normal?
Once the second feral sandshrew was taken care of, Amber sat down on the path and yanked a first aid kit out of her pack. Her Ma had insisted on her having it, and she hadn't been about to argue at the time, nor was she going to complain now as she started to disinfect the scratch on her arm. She hissed a small breath through her teeth upon first touching it, but took a calming breath and finished cleaning it with practiced ease. Before she was going to launch into awkwardly bandaging her arm, however, there was her research assistant to think about, who had been doing most of the rough stuff.
Amber dug around for one of her potions as she called to the aquaera excitedly rocking on her clawed feet. "Hey Winona, over here so I ca--" She cut off, however, and could only stare with a stunned expression as her little assistant was suddenly consumed in a white glow.
Winona was evolving.
Amber is throwing a pokeball at Sandshrew 2
And those experience points bring Winona to level 3, and that's when Aquaera evolves!

The white light began to shift and shape into a new form. Winona dropped to all fours and grew a good 3 feet. Her ridges all became more prominent and fin-like, and claws shaped from her flippers. As the light dissipated, Amber saw that the Pokemon's color lightened and even her marks changed. Congratulations Amber! Aquaera just evolved into Monstream!!

Amber stared in awe as her assistant grew in size. She'd watched pokemon evolve before, of course--Good old Blaine had changed from a little skiddo to a big gogoat right before her eyes years ago--but this was different. She had found herself enthralled by the mystery of the aquaera species, wrapped in in wondering what Winona may become, and she was getting the first of her answers sooner than she could have dreamed. As the light faded, she was left with something all-together different than an aquaera, with a different stance, face, colours, markings...
She suddenly became aware of the fact that she both still had an arm to bandage, and that she was sitting there with her mouth open like a moron.
Amber quickly went about grabbing things out of her first aid kit again, as her mouth made an attempt to actually form words. "Well, that's a surprise. I wasn't expectin' you to change so soon. Don't think I'll be to carry you 'round anymore." She flashed a smile as she awkwardly tied a bandage on her upper arm, but her lame attempt at a joke didn't seem to have gotten a laugh.
In fact, Winona looked a little...Well, the disorientation was wearing off fast, but the look in those purple eyes--they'd been sea green before, and Amber had to admit that the shift was a bit jarring--seemed uncomfortable and uneasy, and almost a bit...forlorn, maybe, was the word? The sight of her assistant looking so less than thrilled with her new change made Amber frown, and she wondered what was wrong. Was it the quadrupedal posture? Winona did look like she'd have a harder time moving on land in this form.
Just before she was going to ask what the matter was, however, it hit her. Maybe the new posture was part of it, but only a part. Short little ridges had become longer fins, flippers had claws, a short muzzle was now larger with the little black nose replaced by a simple set of nostrils, warmer colours had been replaced with icier ones, and eyes were no longer big, round, and as shiny.
Amber smiled again, warmly, and held open her arms as she continued to sit on the dirt path. "Well?" she said, "Aren't y'gonna c'mere an' get yer congratulations hug?"
Winona's eyes lit up and sparkled, and she awkwardly lurched over to reach up and throw her flippers around Amber's neck. "Mon!" she cheered, "Monstream stream!" Her voice had deepened in pitch, but it still sounded like her, and Amber chuckled and hugged back tightly, her wish to be able to understand her starting pokemon's words greater than ever.
They finally pulled away, and Amber gently ruffled the fins on Winona's head. "Y'did a good job there. I may not like battle much at all, but you still handled that pair like a pro. I jus' hope we won't have to make a habit of it." She got up, and tucked away the first aid kit before finally grabbing that potion. "Here, let's give you a lil of this, jus' in case. We still got a bit t'go 'till New Pallet, after all."
Winona didn't argue, and held still for her to activate the spray. Almost instantly, the marks left behind by the sandshrew started to fade away, along with the ache, and she gave a happy wiggle of her tail. "Mon!"
Amber giggled. Still as cute. Definitely still as cute. She gestured for Winona to follow her as she started walking again, though she intentionally moved a little more slowly this time to compensate for her assistant's new form. "C'mon. We've got a town to get to."
Amber used a Potion on Winona. Any Connection skill for interaction?

It was a good thing the pair was almost back to their hometown, because with Monstream's new form came a few disadvantages, one of which was her being much more sluggish on land. Just as Amber was able to get a visual on New Pallet, she heard a tiny, "Pwee!" from behind. A Pichu, obviously a newly hatched Pokemon judging by its size, was making a dash towards Pallet. Nothing seemed to be following it. How odd. The rodent slowed down when it passed by the team just enough for Amber to see what looked like an acorn secured in its teeth.
An acorn? Where did it even find that? And furthermore, what was a Pichu doing here? Not that human boundaries had the effect on Pokemon that people seemed to believe they did. It wasn't really that far from home, just a couple of miles or so, but there were still a few unanswered questions here. Luckily, Amber and the creature had the same destination, so if the researcher wanted to answer those questions she would definitely be able to.
Pichu had gotten about 20 feet in front of Amber, and then a Diglett popped up.. right under the little mouse. The mole Pokemon squeaked a little when it accidentally tripped the small electric creature. It seemed apologetic, but when it noticed that the Pichu was lying on its stomach cringing, it became anxious. Diglett glanced around to look for witnesses, finding no one, it disappeared back underground. Wow. A natural Pokemon hit & run.
Amber receives +.5 Connection! +.5 for SecPos! Updated.
