Liridon Zadkiel Cedar
21 | Male | Demisexual |
Researcher | Pokemon Behaviouralist/Breeder | Oak |
appearance
Liridon is slightly lanky, combining relative slenderness with height. His curious eyes are a rich purple hue, and peer through rectangular plain-glass specs with a thin black frame. His hair is a paler, more airy purple, and he wears long – most often in a ponytail or a bunch. When this hair is not tied back, it reaches down to the small of his back. Some of his hair has a tendency to hang down at either side of his face, framing it and encroaching on it at the same time, usually only reaching around his chin's level before it is cut. Most often, he wears an inquisitive or an amused expression, favouring lazy smiles, irreverent sorts of half-smiles and raised eyebrows. clothing
everyday He tends to wear deep purple or dark blue trousers – always with plenty of pockets – a number of which are tracksuit trousers. He prefers lighter shades of purple, blue and green for his tops, and he never wears red. He has a pastel green hoodie with a sunflower emblem on the chest which is quite old, but he keeps it due to sentimentality. His shoes are navy blue, scuffed and unpolished, and velcro (or equivalent) fastened – as he has had problems with laces getting caught on something (or chewed by Pokemon) before. His clothes tend to be a little worn, as he rarely replaces them if he can help it, but he doesn't let them stay dirty for too long. | formal Even if someone gave him formal wear, he would likely go out of his way to avoid actually putting it on. |
backpack
Liridon has a big, almost torso-length rucksack previously belonging to his mother. It has a few external pockets, including one for a water bottle, and plenty of space for items, clothing, books and samples. However, he rarely fills it up all the way unless some of the stuff is light, as that makes it quite heavy. The rucksack in question is a faded green that looks as though it might have once been a similar hue to the crest of an Axew, but extensive wear and exposure have rendered it closer in hue to the main body of said Pokemon.
Personality
For the most part, Liridon is fairly laid back, preferring to observe the situation before he speaks up or changes variables, but he has a fondness for irreverence. He has a breezy lack of regard for arbitrary authority, and simply refuses to respect on demand. If he believes that the suggestions of an authority figure are reasonable, he is likely to go along with them, but he reserves respect for those he believes have earned it. This is because he is firmly of the mind that trust, like respect, must be earned. With Liridon, no obedience is automatic save when the situation is perilous or it is so obvious as to become routine. This said, he has never allowed himself to go back on a promise, nor would he abandon anyone he has allowed into his sphere of friendship. Therefore, while he may be open to making new friends, it may take a while for him to give them his trust. He is also more comfortable interacting with new Pokemon than new humans, as he tends to be suspicious of strangers.
He loves to learn new things about the creatures who fascinate him the most, particularly Psychic types, Ghost types and Flying types, and would greatly enjoy having his own team of Pokemon in the future – one of the reasons behind his decision to become a Researcher. He finds it easier to become attached to Pokemon than to other humans, and can get a little obsessive over them at times. He's likely to be extremely reluctant to part with any Pokemon he's grown attached to, unless he believes they'd be going to a good home (whether a caring trainer or a well-suited habitat). He talks to Pokemon in pretty much the same way he talks to humans – he's aware that ferals wouldn't understand his words right off the bat, but he's aware that tone of voice is an important part of communication whatever you are.
He is considering the potential in becoming a Professor at some point in the future, and believes that he must have extensive first-hand knowledge and understanding out 'in the field' in order to accomplish this goal. There is also the point that he rather enjoys traipsing around in the great beyond in search of new understanding of, well, pretty much anything he's curious about – but that generally has a lot to do with Pokemon. It's just too bad he's got very little in the way of a sense of direction. Or, well, much in the way of athletic traits. He can run away pretty well, but he's no great shakes at fighting hand-to-hand, and is far more likely to run towards something he should be concerned about than away. He's heard of normal priorities, he just doesn't care for them all that much... A possible explanation could be a mild-to-moderate case of mad science on the brain.
Occasionally prone to silly moods and flights of fancy, Liridon may sometimes attempt to approach situations in unconventional manners, and he wishes to cultivate a reputation as an eccentric. He is not quick to anger, preferring plotting to yelling in someone's face, but he never forgets an insult – especially if it results in him being laughed at or looked down upon. That tends to make him quite prickly. He also has an interesting sense of morals, and sees no problem with vigilante action if he deems it required. His alignment, therefore, I describe as Chaotic Good verging on Chaotic Neutral. Oh, and he dislikes the colour crimson to a slightly irrational degree.
Liridon has a slight tendency to intellectual egotism, which expresses itself in terms of his inordinate fondness for using long words whenever he thinks he has sufficient excuse, wearing glasses that have no true lenses in order to emphasise his intelligence, and having a lower opinion (though not usually contempt) of those he perceives as stupid. Additionally, he is somewhat paranoid, and prefers to be as prepared as he possibly can, often taking a leaf out of whichever books he's currently reading – hence he is prone to over-thinking things a bit, including packing. In the case of his Pokemon research expeditions, this can sometimes mean the inclusion of rope and a length of old steel pipe in his belongings, for reasons best known to himself, along with the usual provisions. However, he is not always able to bring such things – particularly as he dislikes being told that he is ridiculous, and others sometimes tell him that it's more sensible to bring a mercenary than a pipe (he's a bit of a cheapskate, though – at least when he can get away with it).

the backstory
Liridon, who was born a few years after the first exodus into the new world of Mi-aro, is the only son of a Breeder couple who were among the earlier colonists. These Breeders, Yanagi and Hakim Cedar, weren't part of the first wave, though, as they took some time to organise what they would bring with them – and how they would transport their Pokemon. After all, they didn't want to abandon any before the trip. The couple set up in Port City, aiming to help the new community by providing healthy domestic Pokemon for those who needed them. As they discovered, domesticated Pokemon were relatively scarce on Mi-aro, so they rarely had a shortage of customers. When Liridon arrived on the scene, they enlisted the aid of their Pokemon in bringing him up, as their lives had become significantly busier after crossing over. Thus, from an early age, Liridon had both a fascination and a fondness for the creatures he was raised alongside and encouraged to care for by his parents, referring to many of them as though they were family members. One notable example of this being his father's Espeon, 'Uncle' Isaac, who often minded him as a baby. Having no siblings, Liridon grew up playing with young Pokemon, and one of his first chores was helping to prepare food for them. He gradually learnt how best to cater for each taste and, as he became older, he also grew more involved in caring for the sick, and in lulling distressed Pokemon to sleep. He isn't a qualified healer, but he has a good basic knowledge and understanding of how to care for unwell individuals prior to getting a professional.
The Cedar family originally lived in Kanto, on the outskirts of Lavender Town, but the rate of destruction increased too much for them to view it as a safe haven. By the time they were beginning to consider a child, the fires were threatening their ranch on a semi-regular basis, and some of the younger and more adventurous Pokemon they raised had fallen victim. Perturbed and discouraged, the family pulled up their roots and moved to Johto on the recommendation of Hakim Cedar's Grandmother Joy, settling in the forest around Violet City. There, they felt they could hide in safety for a time, maintaining contact with those who required their service through the relatively trustworthy Sages of Sprout Tower. When the word of the Legend Portal spread, they decided that they didn't want to raise a child in a dying world, and began preparations to move themselves and their livelihood to the new world. It was seeing their world, their first home, and some of their Pokemon dying around them that led them to raise Liridon to have such a connection to the Pokemon around him when they felt they were ready to extend the family – they wanted him to feel joy in a connection to the world they had left behind them, but which could continue on in their new environment. They also felt that having an affinity for Pokemon in such a wild place would likely do more good than harm, and came from a faith prizing curiosity, so they encouraged him in his early attempts to understand the creatures. As he grew older, Liridon's interest never waned – if anything, it intensified. Particularly after hearing some of the stories told by those who had wandered through the wild places and seen strange new twists on familiar Pokemon frames. This lit a fire of curiosity in the young Liridon's mind, and he became determined to learn all that he could about the wild ones – maybe even becoming a Professor someday. Now that he's older, he feels ready to start out as a Researcher, and is determined to make his mark.
The Cedar family, including Liridon, are adherents of Mewism, a faith revolving around Mew and, to an extent, Mewtwo. When their son was born, the Cedars named him after some of the characteristics, termed Traits, of these Legends which they felt were important: Liridon, a name meaning free-willed, and Zadkiel, a name associated with freedom, benevolence and mercy. Due in part to the fact that the Mewist faith embraces and extolls the virtues of curiosity, Liridon's interest in understanding Pokemon was encouraged by his family, and he himself is Mewist - seeing himself in the light of science as a Researcher, and a Seeker of New Things in the light of his faith. As a part of this, he may sometimes leave a cairn along the side of his path when exploring, to leave as a kind of marker of his curiosity and a tribute of sorts. He also carries with him in his pockets a pair of small carved tokens from PokeEarth his parents gave to him when he chose his path in life. One, carved from a pink mineral most likely to be rhodochrosite and set with eyes of a blue stone that is probably hemimorphite, is in the shape of a Mew - its carved tail protruding along the back as though resting against it. The other, carved from a purple stone that is probably purpurite, is shaped into a simple representation of Mewtwo. Both of these items are precious to Liridon, in part because they have been passed down through his family since the days of PokeEarth, signifying an important part of his family history, and would also be very hard to replace.
