~Strange sounds have been heard outside of New Pallet, The Ambassador urges trainers to be ready in case of an attack~
Summer is kicking in Port City! The temperature averages about 78°F (25°C) with a bit more rain than usual. Thunderstorms pop up every once in awhile, but overall, the sun is shining, the water's warm, and it looks like it'll be a great summer for the colonies.
He had woken up earlier than usual on this day. He was receiving a new Pokemon, after all, and he didn't want to be late for his first day on the job! (He was sure that Rangers got up early, anyway, if the stories his father had told him about them were to be taken with earnest.) The young man had practically given said father a heart attack as well; if him suddenly jumping as his son thundered down the stairs and the scoring that followed were anything to go by. The blonde apologized several times that morning as he ate his breakfast - glad when his father finally laughed it off and began trying to coach his son on where would be the places to start looking for work once he received his starter.
The young man loathed to admit so, but for the first time in his life, he actually felt nervous - and scared. He hadn't ever stayed away from home for more than a few days before, nor had he ever left the city in which he resided. He had honestly contemplated faking sick in order to get out of going to the appointment with the Ambassador. But then that would be chickening out; and his father seemed so proud of him for doing something like this. He couldn't necessarily back down now, anyhow; it was too late to do so.
"Jason! Can't forget your bag! You'll need it!"
"Thanks, Pa! I'll try to come back t' visit once I get my starter!"
"Just don't get your ass thrown out of the Emisary for acting like an idiot."
"I won't, promise! Catch ya later, Dad!"
After finishing his breakfast and readying himself in a flurry of shouts, running water and curses - and almost forgetting his backpack - Jason nabbed the cowboy-esque hat by the door and popped it on his head as he rushed out the door; said object slamming shut behind him, followed by an annoyed shout from his father. It was ignored as the young man trotted down the streets of Port City, boot clacking against the ground and oftentimes sending dirt when he walked.
The only things he knew of his mentor was things from hearsay. His father had more than a few kind words for the woman, so if he liked her, the young man guessed she would be a good a choice as any for a mentor. He had heard from a few that were taken under her wing a few years back that she often sent her mentees out into the wilds surrounded Port and New Pallet; that suited him just as well. Being that rangers tended to keep to the wilds anyhow - or so he had heard from his father - he couldn't complain.
The large expanse of a building seemed more frightening than it once had been to him. Hand gripped around the strap of his bag, the young man found himself pausing in front of the Emissary with a tinge of fright swelling within him; blue eyes darted around the outside of the building, taking it all in. After what seemed like forever, the tanned man finally inhaled and exhaled, then carefully trudged forward into the building. There wasn't to be any going back now; not for what he had planned.
The inside of the building was rather nice. Again the man paused, now inside, and looked around curiously. While he had passed by it many times during his travels around the city, he had never actually set foot inside the building. Granted, it didn't appear to be like the labs of the old, but it was decent. Peering around more, the man realized that, aside from the clerk at the front desk, there was no one else there. Huh. Was he early? Or maybe he was late? Only one way to find out.
"Uhm, excuse me?" he asked as he approached the front desk. "I'm - My name is Jason Acheson, and I have an appointment with the Ambassador to get my starter?"
As Jason approached, the receptionist immediately held up a finger for 'please wait,' as it seemed she was currently speaking to a client on the X-Gear. "...Of course. ...Yes, Ma'am, around that time would be perfect... Lovely, thank you. We'll see you tomorrow!" She finished in her professionally chipper voice before ending the call and turning towards Jason. "Sorry about that, Mr. Acheson, I try to keep the calls short." She apologized with a calm smile as she checked her clipboard for Jason's name. "...Alright, Jason Acheson. The Ambassador is expecting you." She spoke with a nod, then gesturing to the left. "Through that door is the garden. Follow the trail and you should reach the gazebo." She directed.
Upon following the directions and making his way down the garden path, Jason would reach a large but simple gazebo. A woman sat at a round glass table at the center. Though she seemed to be enjoying the calm atmosphere of the garden, she still gave off an unmistakable authoritative and stern aura that demanded attention. On top of the table laid a large dark case. "Good afternoon, Jason Acheson. I am Anita Nguyen, Ambassador of the colonies." She spoke, standing from her seat and holding out a hand to shake. Once introductions were over, she turned her attention to the large case, opening it to withdraw five Pokeballs. Then leading Jason to a grassy clearing in the garden, she swiftly pressed each button, releasing the Pokemon into view.
"These are your starter options." Anita spoke, gesturing to the group that immediately took to looking around or socializing. "As a Mercenary, you will be able to choose two. To help with your choice, I will explain the advantages of each one." She added with a slight smile, gesturing to the first Pokemon in question. It was a rather cute one, that seemed to be looking about with the utmost curiosity, balancing on its long tail as it took in the new surroundings. Despite its curiosity, it seemed very alert, its long ears twitching at every sound."This is a Sentret. Sentret are very useful Pokemon for anyone who might be wandering out into the wilderness alone, as their instincts when it comes to danger are second to none. They are always on the lookout and able to alert you with their quick reflexes whenever something may be off. They are also naturally endearing Pokemon." She concluded. Glancing towards her, the Sentret raised and lowered itself a few times by its tail, waving its arms in greeting.
After nodding in a return greeting, Anita moved to the next Pokemon. This Pokemon was much smaller and seemed much less confident as it looked around at the others. It seemed unsure of how to interact. After another short moment, the Pokemon suddenly began shaking its head, its antennae rubbing together to create a beautiful sound. With just that, this Pokemon now had the full attention of all the others as they approached. "This is a Kricketot." Anita spoke, smiling. "Kricketot and its evolution are very music oriented Pokemon. A companion such as that would be great for filling in any lonely silence." She added, revealing that, as usual, she knew more about the person she was speaking to than she was supposed to. "They can be a little clumsy at times, what with those little legs, but they make for very lovely companions."
With that, Anita continued to the next Pokemon. "This is a Chatot. Like Kricketot, it is also very music and sound oriented." She explained as the bird Pokemon looked between he and Jason. "Music and sound!" It soon mimicked, dramatically raising its wings and giving a sharp but lovely sounding whistle. Then as it lowered its wings, it glanced towards the Sentret from earlier. Titling its head a few times, it made a sound that was certainly not its own. The Sentret immediately perked up, making the same sound back at the Chatot. "As you can see, Chatot love to mimic sounds and speech. They can imitate human speech to an extent, but they can mimic the sounds of other Pokemon perfectly. This would be a very useful Pokemon to have when it comes to training ferals, don't you think?" She finished, looking to the Chatot as it again mimicked her with a chipper cry of, "Perfectly~!"
With an amused nod towards the bird, Nguyen moved on. Next was another bug-type Pokemon. It was very low to the ground with its legs all but hidden as he warily examined the group. Like Kricketot, it has two antennae atop its head, both of which were currently moving in every direction. "This is a Venipede. Venipede are a very poisonous bug Pokemon that are usually very aggressive. As you can see, this one is not so much the latter. At least, until you get it into a fight. Venipede use their antennae to take in their surroundings and detect prey or enemies through air vibrations. This one would be a very good companion for keeping on the alert, as well as for taking the offensive." She explained, watching as the Venipede continued to swish its antennae about.
"Last is Cubone." Anita continued, gesturing to the Pokemon that had been trying its best to avoid socializing. It was a rather small Pokemon wearing what clearly seemed to be a skull as a helmet. "These Pokemon are often very stand off-ish and are said to have rather tragic origins. However, more often than not, all they need to open up is a bit of kindness. Once you give them that, they are fiercely loyal companions who will go out of their way to protect you in whatever way they can."
"That's that, then. It's time to make your choices. You are also allowed to choose one or two of the original starters, instead, if you would prefer."
Well, at least the man was sure that he was not late; the attendant would have been upset otherwise, wouldn't she have? Jason by the woman and turned, heading in the direction which she had gestured to.
Everything was really pretty, actually. Jason had to keep reminding himself that the Ambassador was on a tight schedule; yet he still found himself slowing down every so often, as to enjoy the scenery more. He had never seen this much plant life so inside the city before. He had rarely been allowed to the boarders of Port City ever, due to the danger that lurked just beyond. The annoyance of not getting to do so sooner rose the more he saw. Sure enough, Jason found the gazebo the clerk in the front office had been talking about. It was nothing fancy; at least, not compared to the ones he had seen in the pictures his parents had shown him. His own real astonishment came from the woman sitting within it. He had assumed that they were going to meet in her office or something. Then again, he supposed this made things more comforting; it wasn't like he was complaining. The Ambassador was as he had expected her to be; albeit, a tad bit taller.
Jason greeted the woman in turn, meeting her hand with his. He waited patiently as she released the Pokemon and spoke. However, he found it hard to pay attention due to the Pokemon. His parents each only owned a few tame Pokemon of which were only used for work; meaning he rarely saw them out of their Pokeball whenever they were home. The same often went for many adults he knew; and those he did, well, it just wasn't the same as having your own Pokemon. And now, he would be getting two no less. A rather mind boggling situation, if you asked him.
None the less, most all of these Pokemon seemed new to him. The Sentret was an adorable Pokemon. It also looked like a normal type, which meant that it could probably learn a lot of moves. But it didn't look like it evolved into anything impressive; and while the Ambassador preached of its worth, it was not wanted by Jason. The Kricketot was amusing. His father had once told him that he had such a Pokemon during his childhood. From what the Ambassador described, he could see why, But it seemed to have little use besides being a Pokemon variant of a musical instrument; so that Pokemon was out.
Chatot seemed like a rather whimsical Pokemon. It's head even looked like some odd note. It could mimic human speech, which would be very helpful. Perhaps he could teach it more, as so it could be a translator between him and future Pokemon? That seemed like a rather brilliant idea, to be honest. Though, he supposed he shouldn't say anything about it aloud.
The Venipede looked, to be blunt, rather odd. The young man couldn't help but wonder how a Pokemon like that could ever be created. Then again, he supposed it could be useful. Pokemon usually got bigger in size, didn't they? How big could this one get? He tried not to shudder at the thought. At least this one wasn't aggressive.
When he finally got to Cubone, Jason felt a twinge of sadness. Poor little thing. The Pokemon was supposed to be a ground type, wasn't it? Ground types worked rather well against a few variations of Pokemon. That would surely help Jason the further out he went. Jason's brow furrowed as he looked over all of the Pokemon again, obviously trying to take his time in deciding what he wanted. After a moment, the young man finally spoke.
"Uhm, if you don't mind - I'd like the Cubone, and the Chatot, too."
The small ground type jumped and stared at Jason, as if surprised. The young man turned to the Ambassador, albeit a rad nervous again.
Anita gave a pleased nod, the Chatot immediately crying out with an echo of "Chatot, too!" Looking to the bird Pokemon with a glint of amusement, she shook her head a bit before quickly returning the remaining Pokemon to their balls. "Each a fine choice" She spoke, holding the remaining two Pokeballs towards Jason for his chosen companions. "I'm sure you and your new companions will get along just fine in your ventures. Treat them well, Jason." She spoke, then leading the man and his new Pokemon back to the Gazebo where she'd left her case.
"Next we have your item options." The Ambassador explained, setting the Pokeballs from before aside as she opened the case. It was filled with all sorts of items. Among these items, the Ambassador retrieved the few that Jason would be given: An X-Gear, two chip-like items, and five Pokeballs. "This is your X-Gear. It is pre-programmed with a Holo Chip as well as my number, so feel free to contact me if you are ever in need of assistance. These other two chips here are a Dex Chip and a Ability Chip. Please choose one." She explained, moving the non-choice items across the table for the trainer to take.
"Along with that, you are allowed to choose three trainer items that can be found in the Global Market for under 35₪. You have the full selection here, to make your pick." Nguyen added, gesturing to the case full of items. It was not clear that these were all trainer items that he could choose from. "Choose Wisely."
Please assign each of your new Pokemon a name, gender, and ability. Please choose between the Ability Chip and the Dex Chip. Please choose three trainer items that can be found in the Global Market for under 35₪.
As the other Pokemon were returned to their respective Pokeballs, the little Cubone that the young man had chosen shyly hobbled towards him; bone dragging behind it as it looked over it's new trainer with an odd expression one could only call curiosity. The Chatot, seeming to have no sense of personal space, cried out, "Wisely! Choose wisely!" as it flapped its wings and launched itself onto it's new human's shoulders. Jason smiled, patting the bird on the head before doing the same with the Cubone.
Jason tookhe Pokeballs with a quick 'thank you,' latching the Chatot's onto his belt while using the other to return the Cubone. Might as well keep it there until they found a better place for a more lengthy introduction.
As Jason picked up his X-Gear, he seemed to look it over with his own sense of curiosity. He hadn't really had much technology of his own growing up, considering that it seemed in limited supply due to their circumstances. It took the young man a moment to pry his eyes off of the object, and to the chips the woman had offered him. After a moment of thought, Jason reached out and grabbed at the Ability Chip. He had heard that it helped your Pokemon learn awesome moves and abilities, which he knew would be really useful while he was out and about in the wilderness.
Choosing from the items were a tad bit harder for him. He seemed ti inspect each and every one carefully, not wanting to screw himself over because he chose the wrong item and didn't have the coin to get more. The man reached a tan hand out towards the assortment of items and then pulled it away; only to reach out again a moment later and pick up two potions. Didn't want his Pokemon getting too injured without having something to heal them before they got to a town. There was another pause as he thought of what else he should grab - and then spotted the Pokemon food. Without a second glance, he grabbed the bag and switched his bag around to his front - earning an annoyed squawk from his new partner - and put the items in their respective pouches.
Once his bag was in its right place once more, he looked to the Ambassador with a somewhat curious glance. "Thank you for all of your help," he said respectfully. "I - is that all I need to do, Ma'am?"
Anita gave an approving nod as Jason picked out the items he would be taking along. He seemed to care a good deal for his Pokemons' well-being, which was always good to see in a new trainer. The Chatot already seemed to be growing especially attached to its new trainer as it perched upon his shoulder, listening carefully for things to repeat."You're not quite ready to go, yet, Mr. Acheson." She replied, shaking her head some.
"As well as your first Pokemon and items, it is my job to give you your first mission." She explained, folding her arms atop the desk. "A swarm of Spinarak have been preparing to attack New Pallet. All trainers are to head over there immediately to help in fighting off the hoard of them. There will be Gogoat carriages to take you straight there, so I suggest you do take a bit of time to get ready and get to know your new Pokemon." She continued, glancing between the new Mercenary and his Chatot. "These Spinarak are a very serious matter. Take caution."
"That is all. Good luck to you and your Pokemon, Jason. Remember that you may always contact me if you need assistance."
