Briar Patch
7 | Male | Everyone still has cooties! |
Mini-Mercenary | Questant | Chief Rusty |
appearance
His hair is a short and frequently messy mop of chocolate brown, with a vaguely shaggy texture. It's just long enough to get into his eyes, but it doesn't reach that far most of the time. This is the sort of hair that still manages to look kind of mussed even shortly after being brushed - and that's if he HAS a brush. At the sides of his head, it reaches just below his ears – but none of it hangs in front of his pixie-like ears. At the back, his hair reaches almost halfway down his neck. His eyes are a deep bottle green. In the right light, one might almost think that there was actually glass in them. Just above his right hip, he has a curved thin scar around the length of his index finger resulting from a collision-related accident with a sharpened stick. Some other scars discretely litter parts of his frame after years spent in the wild, and his back bears a few burn scars from the great burning that claimed his first home. He is missing one of his front teeth, giving him a gappy-toothed grin. He is often a mess. Faceclaim - Shippo from InuYasha
clothing
everyday He wears a mixture of scavenged clothing and pelts, plus a Growlithe tail. | formal Nope, not a chance, just no. |
backpack
He has a bag made from pelts that other kids sewed together - stolen packs are for kids who've proved themselves. It isn't likely to hold up if he puts anything too heavy in it, but it'll carry stuff okay if he's not stupid about it.
Personality
Briar has always been something of a maverick, enjoying excitement and schemes. To him, things like running, playing and the freedom to go where he pleases define his identity, but he doesn't make a big deal about it unless he feels that these things are being threatened. He is relatively easygoing at the best of times (though suspicious of strangers), but will respond automatically if someone goes too far with something, and resents any perceived restriction of his freedom. The concept of following orders is unfamiliar to him and he is the sort who would rush into danger without warning if he thought it would help those he cared about, or if he was bored. He is sometimes described as a rather reckless fellow, more concerned with excitement and speed than with subtlety, and more interested playing than with some of the more intellectual pursuits, but he isn't stupid - just rather easily bored. So long as he is free to play and explore at will, or at least go for a good run, he is content, but he becomes anxious if he starts to suspect that he's been abandoned. He is exuberant, and his enthusiasm is often infectious, and he enjoys singing. His temper is prone to flaring up if he is directly insulted or wronged in some other way, and he rarely forgets any such insult or grievance, but he knows well enough that if he holds everything against people, he will not get very far. He is, after all, a little tyke in the wild, and not one of the oldest.
He is outgoing and open to making new friends, but it may take a while for him to give them his trust if they aren't Lost Kids, or are new to the group. As a highly social person, though, he wants to have friends he can trust, and is actively looking for them.
In terms of alignment, I'd call him Chaotic Neutral verging on Chaotic Good in places, and he revels in mischief and excitement without necessarily always thinking of the consequences. He's very fun-oriented, and loves to have an audience for his antics – however, he isn't entirely fizzy-headed, and is just as likely to lay back and relax as he is to play boy racer. If left alone for too long, he can start to get quite gloomy, meaning that he'd rather spend time with people he doesn't like (and annoy them) than be left on his own. He dislikes being pressured into anything, such as an important decision, and he hates being called a midget by bigger kids.

the backstory
Briar originally came from a large family originally, and is used to having many siblings to mess around with – which is part of the reason behind his being drawn to socialise, and something that has helped him fit in with the Lost Kids. He doesn't, however, remember clearly where he lived, what his parents and siblings looked like, or what his last name used to be. He was rather young when he came through the Legend Portal, having been separated from his family by an event he only remembers as 'a great big burning'. He was on his own, following at a distance whenever he saw someone travelling in any defined direction, and scavenging or stealing sustenance from them. It is in this way that he reached the Portal at all - being so young, he wouldn't have survived otherwise. He was scared of the Portal at first, and camped out around it scavenging and stealing from travellers heading through it for a while, until there was a long gap when nobody was coming. He couldn't go far from the Portal without getting hungry or thirsty, and there was nobody to fend off any threats or provide sustenance, so he took a chance and went through one night.
He arrived in the vicinity of civilisation, but everything was new and different, which was also kind of scary. He took to sneaking around and filching food and other things from the people in the settlement known as Port City, and sleeping in whatever shelter was available in and around the buildings without getting caught. Little did he know that he was not the only one doing so, until he bumped into another raggedy child one night. It was a girl, taller than him, stealing a Pokeball from, well, someone. Possibly the Laboratory, possibly a Trainer or Breeder. Lonely, he followed her as she fled back into the wild woods, and was amazed to discover that there were many other wild children like him living in the forest. He was very soon noticed by the other Lost Kids, and was presented to the oldest surviving feral children for appraisal. Once it was decided that he could stay, he was essentially part of a big family full of siblings again, and he decided that he'd do anything to make sure nothing happened to this one.
It's been a few years since Briar was inducted into the Lost Kids, though he really couldn't say how many if asked, and a new surname - Patch - has been bestowed upon him by an older, slightly literate feral child. He is still considered a subordinate member of the community, and is not allowed as many of the nice stolen things until he can prove himself to the Lost Kids. It is for this reason that he is embarking on a quest - a journey of self-discovery, a rite of passage, a thieving exploration. His task is to bring back something of great value - whether knowledge, Pokemon, item or food. No trifling common stuff, something impressive. He hopes to be allowed to bring a cool Pokemon with him, but his quest's provisions are decided by the older children.
