~Strange sounds have been heard outside of New Pallet, The Ambassador urges trainers to be ready in case of an attack~
Summer is kicking in Port City! The temperature averages about 78°F (25°C) with a bit more rain than usual. Thunderstorms pop up every once in awhile, but overall, the sun is shining, the water's warm, and it looks like it'll be a great summer for the colonies.

Civilization was much larger and more lively than Sybil had originally expected it to be- but at the same time much smaller and simpler than she imagined it. That didn't stop her getting lost as she wandered around taking in the sites and trying to get used to the sheer volume of noise around her. There were A LOT of people, and she was having trouble keeping track of them all. And they didn't seem to much care about her- until she bumped into them. But a sorry seemed to stop any confrontation and Sybil was once again free to wander about aimlessly and overwhelmed.
Somewhere alone the way she had forgotten the time, and suddenly relized that she had promised to stop by the Proffessor's lab. He'd offered her a pokemon and a job, so to speak. She wasn't sure if it was repayment for her helping him limp back to the city or if this was just what he did- surely she could ask someone. After finding her way there once more, of course. More than a few people were happy to point the way- but she still managed to get herself lost over and over in the unfamiler streets. Finally someone took pitty on her after the third time she asked them for directions and showed her the way.
The lab was larger than any building she'd ever seen before, and she tried to keep from looking too in awe. She glanced around before stepping up to the attendant at the front of the desk, "Excuse me," She peered over the top of the desk, curious as to what the individual was looking at across from her, "I'm here to see the professor? I'm late." She was not particularly apologetic, but rather stated the fact as it was in case he'd been wondering after her arrival. Though really she could be on time or early- time moved so different here than in the quiet soildute of her hut and ravine.
Sybil was exited for a pokemon of her own, however. She'd not really spent time with one for almost a decade, not since Pig passed as old things tend too. The rest of the pokemon in the woods seemed as hostile to her as grandauntie had been to the rest of the world, and she really couldn't risk trying to interact with them.
Giving her clipboard once last glance over, the receptionist then looked up at Sybil with a smile. "Sybil Emrys, yes? The Professor expected you would be." He replied good naturedly, nodding some a she scribbled something down. "He hasn't any other appointments scheduled for a few hours, to make sure you wouldn't miss yours. I heard about how you helped him at the ravine, however, so it only makes sense that he would be a little more accommodating." She finished with a kind smile, then gesturing to the door to her left. "Go right on through there, the Professor is waiting."
Upon going through the door, Sybil would find a large laboratory, with various Pokemon already set on exploring. At her entrance, many of the Pokemon focus their attention on her, either running, flying, or waddling over. A small Oddish seemed especially keen, hopping up and down at her feet as if wanting to be picked up. A bit closer to eye-range, however, floated a Misdreavus, casually circling the trainer's head as if scoping her out. It was obvious from the way each of these Pokemon went to checking her out that they each had very different personalities.
A light-hearted chuckle could be heard from the upper level of the laboratory as Oak, himself, watched the commotion from over the railing. "It seems they approve!" He called, then casually making his way down the stairs to properly address his friend. "Sybil! It's good to see you. Find your way through the city alright?" He teased, giving the trainer a well-meaning pat on the shoulder. "I've took a bit of time to pick these Pokemon out for you. I can only give you one, of course, so I hope you choose well!" He spoke, grinning.
"To assist in your choice, I'll give a quick summary of each one." Oak added with a steady nod. With that, he directed Emrys' attention towards a rather mischievous looking fox that had just prior been sniffing at her ankles. It now seemed that it had somehow managed to sneak off with one of her various accessories. But how could it resist, really? "Oh-hoh, making trouble already, are we? That one is known as Zorua. They're quite natural little trouble-makers, but can be quite a joy to have around and keep you company. They can be quite powerful, as well, especially once they evolve!"
As the the Zorua reluctantly returned the trinket he'd been caught stealing, it was immediately snatched up by another of the Pokemon, who flew away with it up to perch on the upper railing. "Ah, Murkrow! Hmm, they're two-of-a-kind, I must admit. Of course, collecting cute little trinkets and baubles is a hardwired part of Murkrow nature." Quercus explained with a chuckle. "You may have some troubles with these two, but they mean well all the same!" He concluded, shaking his head some.
"Next is Misdreavus." He spoke, gesturing to the ghost-type Pokemon casually floating nearby. "Now that I think about it, Murkrow tried to take its 'accessory', too! You've already got something in common." He teased. "Misdreavus is a very mischievous Pokemon-- oh dear, there seems to be a pattern here-- that absorbs fear. There's many advantages to having a ghost-type Pokemon by your side, especially when you're usually on your own. They can be a very powerful companion, and with a special stone, you could even have Misdreavus here evolve into the even more powerful, Mismagius. I'm sure you two could get along just fine."
"Lastly we have Oddish and Swablu! Very different from the others, aren't they? But just as suited to you, if not more, I can assure that! With your particular line of work, an Oddish could be a very useful companion, and even more so as it evolves down the line! They have a very natural affinity to plants-- as you may have guessed. Not only that, but they make very cute little companions, don't you think?" He finished, chuckling, then looking to the Swablu. The cloud-winged bird was perhaps one of the brightest colored things in the room. It was currently flapping in place from a few feet away, watching the commotion through curious eyes.
"This is Swablu. These are a very friendly Pokemon that love to help and people in general. Its wings are as soft as cloud. Swablu likes to use its wings to clean dirty surroundings, as well. Nothing goes unpolished! Even some of my machines in here are looking a little shinier... Hmm.. They are very sweet and loving companions. And when they evolve, you can even ride atop their back to travel through the skies."
"That's all of them. So, what do you think? The floor is yours, Sybil. Remember, only one."

"Thank you!" Sybil smiled at the attendant- and one ought to thank someone who has done you a good turn. Grandauntie had taught her that long before she met a person. It was such a small, simple form of repayment that made people happy. And it was very good of the professor to assume she would be late- though he'd traveled with her and knew as well as she did how often she'd left home. Still it was considerate and she would have to thank him too.
The laboratory she found upon going through the door was something amazing. Machines and a second floor and an adorable swarm of pokemon coming to greet her. She had never been rushed by friendly pokemon before, and beamed at them all, scooping the Oddish up and petting its leaves gently. "I'm glad they approve- I'd hate to not be up to their standards." She laughed, looking up to see the professor. "I suppose so- I made it here but I am also late." And she had to follow a friendly soul through the streets like a lost growlith. "You are looking much better!"
Choosing one pokemon seemed like a much simpler task when they were not staring at her in the face. She continued to pet the oddish absentmindedly as Oak explained the different pokemon's personalities. She chuckled as the drama, for lack of a better word, over her little trinket unfolded. She was not particularly stricken at the loss of it. "You should keep that," Sybil gestured to the polished stone amulet currently claimed by the murkrow, "It's a protection amulet against falls." She teased, though that was exactly what it was.
Sybil considered the pokemon carefully- she needed to make a good choice. The pokemon would need to be tough and reliable. Especially if Sybil intended to return from her hut, and she did, she would probably need to rid it of some feral infestations. As useful as both the oddish and swablu would be she wasn't sure they could help her with that- which left her with the three mischievous pokemon. Well, at least it won't be dull.
While she'd always liked birds and the fox was very cute, she had to admit she felt a particular kinship to the elegant ghost floating around her. Sybil couldn't say exactly what it was- but there was something similar between the two of them. Gently Sybil placed oddish back on the ground and gave it a final pet before meeting misdreavus's gaze.
"I think I'll take Misdreavus here with me," She glanced over to Oak, letting out a breath she hadn't quite realized she'd been holding in.
“Excellent choice, Sybil!” Oak shouted rather enthusiastically. He handed the girl a pokeball and took the rest, easily recalling all except the Murkrow. The black bird flew around the lab making it impossible for the good professor to recall the naughty pokemon. This gave Sybil plenty of time to interact with her new starter.
Wheezing and looking rather dishevelled the professor threw his hands up as he yelled at the Murkrow hiding in the rafters, “Fine you can stay here until we’re done. But no taking anything!” The dark-type snickered to itself, safe from any pokeball in its perch.
“Where was I? Oh yes! You need items!” excitedly the professor skipped to the back of his lab, where several items lined the shelves. Some Sybil would be familiar with and others less so, but all could be found at the global market.
With his arms full, the professor made his way back to Sybil, which seemed quite a feat without dropping anything, and had the items flood the surface of his desk. There was an X Gear with a Holo chip already installed, two other chips in a glass case, 4 pokeballs, a data log, a mortar and pestal, along with an assortment of Trainer and Survivila Items all under 35₪.
“Please select either a Dex Chip or Photo chip and two trainer items and two survival items.”
Once Sybil had selected her items and put them in a pack the Professor eagerly shook her hand. “My number is already programed into your X gear. Please inform me when you make a new discovery by putting it in your data log! A young researcher, such as yourself, should head to New Pallet. I hear that Professor Ivy is setting up a group of researchers to form a guild. I will give you a reference if you require one.”
“Do you have any questions? This is all happening so fast for you, I’m sure.”

The pokeball in her hand was heavier than she’d expected it to be, and smooth to the touch. She gripped it tightly and met the eyes of the ghost pokemon- her ghost pokemon. It was quiet for a long moment, with the misdreavus only cocking her head to one side and watching the human in front of her carefully. “I’m called Sybil,” The women said finally, and the pokemon nodded thoughtfully in understanding, “And you should probably have a name as well.” Just as she really wouldn’t like being called “woman” or “human” Sybil imagined that pokemon wouldn’t like being called by their species for the rest of their life.
“There is a word that means witch-Hexe. I think that would be a good name,” She said, dropping the pokeball into the mess of her sack bag, she’d find it again later if she needed it. The misdreavus, or Hexe rather, floated back in forth considering the name offered to her. She wiggled and floated over to rest by Sybils shoulder, nodding her head sagely. As it happened she did like the name, though it was not what she had imagined being called. Sybil smiled and gently lifted a hand to gently stroke the side of Hexe’s head. The pokemon was silent, but didn’t move away from the affection which Sybil thought was a good sign.
The pair watched in silence, though both look amused, as the last of the bird drama played out before them, before the professor suddenly whirled around to face her, talking about items. Sybil wasn’t sure what he was on about at first, but off he trot only to return moments later with an arm full of things. Sybil looked to Hexe, who only shrugged uncaringly. Clearly she was used to it. Sybil stepped up to the desk and looked over the pile of things in front of her.
Gingerly she picked up the X-gear. She- well she wasn’t really sure how to used it. Not about to say so allowed, she took the photo chip and put both far more carefully into her bag than the pokeball- not sure how delicate to be with them. She gathered up the other sundry items- choosing a water filter and pack of trail rations, an extra pokeball and a potion.
“Well, um thank you.” Sybil flexed her hand from the handshake- why the touching? She’d never been to New Pallet either; though she was sure she had some idea where it was. Would she need a reference though? A reference for what? Well she could used a map to reference but Oak seemed to have given her what he had to offer so Sybil assumed she would find someone who sold maps and trade them for it. “No I’ve got this. Head to New Pallet, send you note of any interesting things I find and join some manner of guild.” Also figure out how to work her X-gear, but she was too proud to admit she’d never used any manner of tech before. “Thank you for everything professor. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon.”
Sybil waved, not wanting to shake hands again, before checking her bag to make sure she’d not forgotten anything and turning on her heel and strolling out. She waved to the attendant at the desk as well, and with Hexe following silently behind her emerged back into the city, set to figuring out how to leave the city. Because she had forgotten how’d she’d gotten in.
