| Here we go again. Gwen thought somberly, as she made her way toward Port City's laboratory. It wouldn't have been the first time in her life that her interests had changed from what she thought they were. She had once showed interest in communications with spirits. As she grew older though, she grew more skeptical about the practice and how much they were actually doing, and the idea lost it's mystery. Researching the lands seemed like a more practical use of her efforts. The more humanity expanded, the more that would be available for everyone. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but alas, no matter how much she endured, she still hadn't been happy with it.
Take three, she now faced the prospect of pokemon taming. Maybe it wouldn't help expansion efforts, but the land always needed strong trainers to tame and fend off the vicious feral pokemon that populated their new world. Training pokemon felt more right to her than anything else though, so perhaps this would be the career choice she would be able to stick to? Only time would tell. It was just a matter of reaching the laboratory and getting some pokemon and supplies to start herself off.
Before going to the lab though, she diverted from the route to stop outside the gates surrounding the port's cemetary. Five weeks had past since her grandmother died. It only took six months from detection before she had succumbed to lung cancer, and though weeks had past since, Gwen was still more solemn than usual. She wasn't the person to get overly emotional, but that didn't make her less saddened. She could spot Nocture, her Grandmother's Chandelure hovering quietly over it's trainer's grave, though she chose to leave him alone. He had been more attached to her grandmother than he had ever been with her, and she wouldn't really know what to say to him anyway.
Instead, Gwen uttered a short prayer before continuing on her walk towards the lab. From there on she remained directly on course, paying no mind to whatever distractions she passed. Soon she reached her destination, and entered the lab's lobby. "Greetings miss, I am here to see Professor Oak." Gwen stated curtly. The receptionist directed her to the room where the professor awaited her, and Gwen nodded and gave her a quick word of thanks before heading off.
Through the doors, her eyes quickly fell on the pokemon professor. "Good morning Professor. Are my pokemon ready?" She questioned, straight to the point. | Words: 419

Oak whipped around on his toes. His dark, shoulder-length hair flowed in the breeze and - wait, they were inside right? "Oh sorry!" the older man called to Gwen. He rushed behind her to turn off an odd sort of device that was predominantly an open circle on a stand. "I was working on a new AC unit and thought I'd use it as a way to add some drama in my next trainer's visit!" A child-like energy seemed to radiate off of the man as he spoke with legitimate happiness. A large smile crossed his face when he realized why the woman was here, he gestured her to follow him. Quercus stopped by a large, shelved wall that held numerous pokeballs. "Well I hope you're ready for this.. Gwendolyn was it? Let's take a look at some of the Pokemon I've chosen for you!" He pulled five pokeballs off the wall and released them without a second thought. Upon releasing the Onix, Oak immediately regretted the decision. The Pokemon wasn't as huge as those that lived in the wild, but it still took up quite a bit of space. Quercus made disgruntled groans as he crawled over the Onix so that he could see Gwen again.
"Ahem. So first up is Onix. You want a practical Pokemon? Check this one out. It's a huge rock-snake that can tunnel at 50mph underground, has a natural, magnetic compass, and can even absorb other hard materials!" He paused. "Okay, well maybe not that practical, but a good choice all the same! As soon as I saw your profile in our database, I instantly thought of Misdreavus. They're an ethereal Pokemon who share your love of jewelry! And ya know, they're spirits and whatnot. Meditite would fit you perfectly. It would cause any disturbance in your daily meditation, in fact, it would probably enjoy meditating with you! They're also quite intelligent and disciplined. Mawile are really independent Pokemon, thanks to their large jaw they usually can leave their parents a few months after birth and fend for themselves - although that might explain why they're so rare... hm.. In any case! The final Pokemon I have for you is an Elekid! Strong, independent, and disciplined. I thought you might feel some sort of connection there."
Oak nodded to a bag on the desk. Inside it contained an X-Gear, Data Log, First Aid Kit, Berry Sack, Spile, Canteen, Tool Bag, Mortar & Pestle, Weapon Sheathe, and a Quiver.
"You can choose two," he said with a slight grin.

| Gwendolyn raised a brow at the professor's choice of introduction. "It's... alright." She said tonelessly. Well, truthfully speaking, she was feeling a twinge of annoyance. She hadn't come here for theatrics and she wasn't really in the mood to put up with such childish behavior. She just wanted to get her pokemon and leave without having her patience tested. Fortunately though, she was still able to hide her feelings well despite her already somber mood.
Unfortunately though, the already less than smooth meeting only got worse, as the professor released the first pokemon of the five choices she had. A flicker of red light was the only warning before an Onix suddenly occupied a large amount of the room. Gwendolyn jumped back, her slightly widened eyes being the only hint of her alarm. "Probably should have done this outside." Gwendolyn remarked quietly.
What was done was done though, and soon enough she also had four other choices before her. In addition to the Onix, there was also a Misdreavus, a Meditite, a Mawile, and an Elekid. The Onix was a tank, that was for sure. Given proper room, it would likely be able to handle quite a bit of situations. Unfortunately Gwen had to disagree on it being practical. The situation it was in spoke for itself regarding that. The thing would be useless in tight quarters, and releasing it into a settled area would be like unleashing a tauros on a china shop.
The Misdreavus, she did like. She may have given up on becoming a medium, but she still had a soft spot for ghost types. That being said though, it also reminded her of her grandmother. Because of that, she wasn't really sure if she wanted it or not. The meditite, well, having someone to meditate with was nice, but she wasn't really dead set on the fighting type. Mawile, now that piqued her interest. It was a strong pokemon, most steel types were. It was also a fairy type which made it immune to both dragon and poison type moves. "I'll choose the Mawile and..." Gwen began before she looked over the elekid. It was a generic electric type. It could use some fighting type moves, but overall she wasn't really impressed by it.
Gwen's attention shifted back to the Misdreavus. Perhaps under better circumstances she might have favored this pokemon, but at the present time, she didn't think it was a good choice for her. "You also have the regional starters available to trainers, yes? Do you have a Charmander by any chance?" She asked the professor, after finally deciding to turn the Misdreavus down. She also looked over the items given, the selection of which didn't appear to be anything she couldn't get from the local market. "I'll also take the X-Gear and the Data log." | Words: 468

An excited Oak smiled and nodded. The man was a genius, but more or less oblivious to the emotions of people. Either that or he just chose to ignore them to continue his optimistic outlook. With a heroic grunt, he leaped off of the Onix and went back to the shelf to grab his Charmander. "Take a look!" He tossed the pokeball in front of Gwen. After the red light disappeared, a tiny, orangeish lizard Pokemon was revealed. The fire type was a little stand-offish of the woman. Its posture was upright, not quite the norm of its species, and its eyes were narrowed at Gwen, as if it were inspecting her.
Charmander sniffed the air and glanced back at Oak with a confused look. The professor waved his hand as to suggest for the Pokemon to get closer. A sort of whine came from the Pokemon as it inched closer to the trainer. Eventually, it stood only a couple of feet away from Gwen and looked up at her were eyes filled with both curiosity and suspicion. Quercus nodded at their interaction then went to withdraw all of the other Pokemon.
With that, the professor strolled over to Gwen and handed her a small case containing a Holo Chip as well as 6 deactivated pokeballs. He then handed her two more, one held the Mawile, and the other was for Charmander.
"Do you like it?" he asked with a cheesy grin. Quercus really didn't give her time to answer the question before he was already edging the woman and Pokemon out the door. "I'm sorry, I hate to be rude, I really do, but I just got wind of a situation that's happening in the city and I need to direct my full attention to it." He nodded at the trainer than ran off to the back of the lab with a wave. "Good luck Gwen!"

| As the Charmander stared her down, she stared straight back, unflinching. Whatever this Charmander was looking for, she assumed strength and confidence, and that is what she attempted to behold. Unfortunately, it didn't seem too sure about her. It wasn't a particularly good sign, but it could have been worse.
Nonetheless, the Charmander was quickly returned along with the rest of the pokemon, and before Gwen could request to see any other Charmander he might have had, the professor dumped the items into her hands and was already shooing her out the door. Well, I guess that's that. She thought. Well, things may not have gone perfectly, but somehow she was still in a better mood than when she had first arrived. She had two pokemon now, and a fair amount of supplies, and her new career was about to begin, so even she had to feel a bit happier.
The professor had mentioned something happening in town, and she couldn't help but wonder about that. Before she left the lab she paused at the reception desk. "Hello again, the professor said something was happening in town but didn't have time to elaborate. Can you tell me what's going on?" She requested. The receptionist then explained that there was a horde of Anorith invading the port. "Thank you." Gwen said, before heading out, her first job already in mind.
