WARNING: Possible Spoilers for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Ahead
Long ago, before humans settled upon the Earth of Old Times, there were two creatures that had been sent down in a spirally twist of fire and ice towards the molten crust of the planet they would come to know as home. From within the odd tomb came two beings of unmatched strength and power - they would later become known as Groundon and Kyogre by the race of man. Groudon, a large beast whose very touch could spill fire onto the land, rose up mighty pillars of rock and stone; creating habitable spaces for future generations to thrive upon. Kyorge, an aquatic beast, poured out of the tomb in which it had been imprisoned, tidal waves of water flourishing and spilling into any crack and crevice it could reach. Odd weather occurrences followed their appearance; rain putting out fires which had arisen from the Earth's core and giving the new land which Groudon had bestowed new life; unbelievable heat from the Earth's sun gave these new lives room to grow and flourish under its intense heat.
After many a year, the great beasts, tired in from their intense work, were laid to rest; Groudon hiding away deep into the Earth, Kyorge plummeting itself into the deepest crevice of the oceans it had made. There they slept for many years as the world around them that they had helped create grew and flourished with life. There they laid undisturbed as the world went on without them, its residents unknowing of what exactly had aided in their creation. But they would soon learn.
More than one hundred years had passed - perhaps even a century; no one can really be too sure - before reports circled the globe of strange occurrences; earthquakes appeared at random even the most unlikely places, tsunamis destroyed many sea-side cities, and immense rainfall and droughts destroyed much of the needed food supplies around the world. This went on for nearly three months - until an earthquake broke free a beast of immense size entombed in the vastness of one of the many regions that had been created many years ago. From the fissure the earthquake had create arose Groudon, angered that he had awoke to find that water had poured itself further than it once had; descending much of *his beloved Earth underwater while he had been away. Angrily and without concern for the beings that now inhabited the Old World, Groudon roared and stomped his way from his den and towards the oceans where his rival slumbered. In his wake, Groudon brought earthquakes of immense power, lava that surged where he walked, and an intense heat from the sun - one that had only appeared once before, when he was first on the Old World.
The beast Kyogre was awoken from slumber more suddenly than she had hoped as the earth shook within the confines of *her den. Upon surfacing, she found herself distraught; her precious water evaporating from the intense heat of the sun and leaving less and less room for the aquatic life that called her domain home. Enraged, the Leviathan surged through the water, bringing with her chaotic hurricanes, deadly tsunamis, and an unending rain. These two odd storms - the rain and intense heat of the sun - fought for dominance as the two beasts clashed and fought where the land met the sea. Their fighting brought with them what appeared to be the end times; the death of humanity, and everything else on the planet. The beasts seemed unable to cease fighting; never appearing to tire from their onslaught of attacks to one another.
Almost all hope had been lost among humanity of the Old Days (well before the appearance of the portal); many praying to any God that was willing to listen, begging for forgiveness and for their world to be as it once had been. Arceus, feeling pity for the humans yet unable to communicate with and control the two Weather Beasts due to their immense rage and hatred they held, sent in stone one final act of kindness towards Earth; it's name was Rayquaza.
From the sky cascaded a meteor of brilliant colors that could be seen for many miles. Humans watched in wonder as the meteor landed in the middle of the ocean; sending ripples of water and light alike afar. From the cracked meteor rose a green, snake-like beast with odd symbols on its body. Upon sensing the distraught of the residents and weather around it, the beast cried out in agony, and proceeded to fly over many miles of sea and land alike until it found the source of the destruction of Earth. Angered by it's comrades fool heartedness, the serpent - Rayquaza - took to the skies in search of the two beasts that had caused such destruction. It did little to conceal itself; people staring with wide eyes and opened mouths as it flew overhead, calling out angrily to the beasts of war for what they had done to their planet. An intense war was battled among the trio once the masters of water and earth were found; the event sending ripples around the world.
Rayquaza fought long and hard - though this was no easy task. The beasts of land and water found it easier to unite with one another in an effort to keep the sky serpent at bay, and out of their fight. This lasted for many days, and it almost seemed as though the human's prayers ultimately went unanswered. It was with a final surge of power and a blessing from Arecues, and an odd radiancy that came from the two feuding beasts, that Rayquaza ended the fight - draining their power to the fullest extent and sending the two into a deep slumber; Kyogre being banished deep within the Earth's oceans, and Groudon being forced to dwell deep within the Earth's core, both many miles away from each other and leaving their contender not to worry. Finish with its task, Rayquaza drifted back into the Earth's atmosphere with a triumphant cry - never to be seen or heard from for many, many years.***
The people who lived during the First Calamity - which they were to call it - thought Rayquaza to be a God among Pokemon; it had come and saved them during their time of need. Seeing that Groudon and Kyorge were also God-like - in that they could raise the sea and land at their will, and thus were believed to be the creators of land and sea, respectively - were soon tiered below Rayquaza. They became known as the Gods of Land, Sea and Sky; a force to be reckoned with. Prayers would be sent to them in terms of wanting a fruitful harvest (whether the prayer needed more rain or sunshine), a safe journey across land and sea and for the calm in between wars the beasts seemed to frequent once every hundred years or so to last. Though many prayed to each of Legendary Trio seperatly, many saw them as a whole entity; one could not survive without the other, as their existence would become pointless. As such, they are seen as one entity during times of peace rather than three.
*most of this faith believe Groudon to be masculine, while Kyorge to be feminine, according to their 'element'. Rayquaza is still considered genderless
