| Try as the Espurr did to find her target through all the fuzziness caused by the charmander's smokescreen, when she swiped at the orange charmander shaped blob, it had suddenly jumped out of the way on her and her claws fell on empty air. Not quite expecting the miss, the Espurr stumbled and fell over into the sand. Before she could even begin to get up, she then felt more of those hot embers scorching through her fur. Unable to get up fast enough, she simply rolled away, smothering the embers as she went before she finally did get back up.
The Espurr's breaths were coming in huge rapid gasps, and she seemed to make a faint squeak with every one. She was so exhausted and hurt. Who had she been kidding? She never stood any chance against this charmander. She was already half beaten and there was still that Mawile to worry about. I should have just took my friend and run. She thought as regret washed over her like a heavy blanket. What was going to happen when she lost? Would the ... it was female right? ... would the lady capture her? Take her away from her friend? Maybe she'd be left for dead and then they'd take the egg away from her.
Espurrs eyes watered a bit, only making her vision even worse. Still she could make out the splash of orange and glowing tail flame, and she once again targeted it, running straight at it until she full on collided with it and scratched it up as much as she could with startling ferocity. She didn't stop until the Charmander shoved her back out of the way. Falling back into the sand she gave the Charmander one more desperate look. "I won't let you take my friend from me!" She screeched at it, before turning tail and fleeing back behind the rock she came from.

| Ignis kept his eyes on the Espurr as it rolled away from him, smothering the embers he had sprayed on it. Rolling them out wouldn't do the kitten much though, since they'd hurt just from the contact. It was only a matter of time before the Espurr finally went down though, and the Charmander didn't see this ending in any way other than his own victory.
Ignis however, was not expecting the Espurr to suddenly attack with as much ferocity as it did and for a few moments he struggled to get the kitten off of him. Once he did manage to shake the psychic type off however, his eyes were glowing fury and his tail flame suddenly erupted to twice it's usual size. He didn't understand a word of what the Espurr shrieked at him, and at this point he didn't even care. When it ran away, he followed in hot pursuit.
Ignis may not have understood the Espurr, but that wasn't the case for everyone. Sakura stood there for a second, jaws agape before she shouted after Ignis. <Wait, Ignis! Stop!> Unfortunately, the Charmander paid no attention to her and kept going. Sakura immediately gave chase and Gwen followed closely behind her, unsure of what the Mawile was alarmed about.
When they turned the corner however, it was too late. Embers still fizzled on the ground around the collapsed and fainted Espurr. The kitten had fallen meer inches from what looked to be a pokemon egg. <That Espurr was just protecting it's egg.> Sakura muttered solumnly as she took a few steps forward before stopping a few feet behind Ignis. This had been a very unfortunate misunderstanding.
Ignis merely snorted, whether it was just how he was, or he was unempathetic due to the lingering effects of his blaze ability, he simply didn't care what the Espurr was doing. <We weren't threatening it. It attacked us.> The charmander growled. His tail flame was beginning to die down, but he was still angry at the Espurr over the sudden attack, and his now fairly scratched up body.
Gwen sighed, and shook her head. She didn't know exactly what words were going between Sakura and Ignis, but she could tell they had differing views on what happened. She herself, saw it as unfortunate that things ended this way, though she also couldn't blame Ignis for his lack of sympathy either. Realizing it though, she did feel sorry that she hadn't tried to have Sakura try to communicate with the Espurr. It probably would have saved them all this trouble.
"What's done is done." Gwen said calmly as she reached into her bag, pulling out the empty poke ball. Of course, little changed of her intentions. Without much more thought, Gwen threw the poke ball at the Espurr. After that was taken care of she knelt beside the egg and gently put her hand on it. The egg was warm to the touch, and Gwen wondered if it was close to hatching yet. Unfortunately, pokemon reproduction wasn't a topic she had delved too thoroughly into during her researcher days. Hatching this egg was likely to become a bit of an adventure.

| After the poke ball had sucked the Espurr up in the usual flash of red light, the ball only rocked slightly back and forth, seeming like more of an effect of the capture process than anything since the pokemon locked inside was unconscious and unable to struggle against it. After a few moments, the ball finally stopped moving, and it emitted a loud tone, indicating that the Espurr had been successfully captured.
While Gwen picked up their newly captured pokemon, Sakura turned her gaze back to Ignis momentarily. A second later though she did a double take, and just began to stare at him in amazement at what she saw. "Maw..." The Mawile whispered to Gwen as she tugged gently on her trainer's pants, while trying not to startle Ignis at the same time.
"What is... Hmm?" Gwen looked down at Sakura, then to Ignis, whom was now glowing fairly brightly. Suspecting what was happening, she simply watched as the charmander began to change shape, growing about a foot taller, with both his arms, claws and tail gaining length, and a single horn sprouting from the back of his head. Eventually the glowing subsided, and what was revealed was a newly evolved Charmeleon. "Well congratulations Ignis. It appears you've evolved." Gwen said, smiling.
Ignis was hardly conscious of the evolution as it happened, still recovering from the adrenaline rush that came from the combination of anger, battle and his blaze ability. When Gwen congratulated him, he looked down at himself and examined his lengthened limbs and more obvious claws. "Char." He said, in satisfaction, his voice a fair bit deeper than it had been when he had been a charmander moments before.
Sakura walked up to Ignis and examined the Charmeleon curiously, her eyes sparkling in wonder. <I have to look up at you now. No fair.> The Mawile pouted as she discovered she was now the smaller of the two of them. She became even more jealous of her friend knowing that she wouldn't be able to evolve herself, and Ignis would eventually evolve even further.
Ignis smirked at the Mawile, amused by her fretting over his now superior height. He patted the top of her horn-jaw, laughing in a good natured way at her. Sakura frowned a bit, but it quickly turned to a cheerful smile as she too began laughing.
Gwen smiled too, and though she didn't really understand what they were saying, she could tell they were having a nice friendly moment. "Good job Ignis, you did great. Time to rest up now." She said, pulling out his poke ball and returning the Charmeleon to it. She then turned to Sakura. "Ready for a walk? Maybe we can find something for you to battle." Gwen suggested as she knelt down and scooped up the Espurr's egg. She held firmly in her arms, hoping her body heat would be enough to keep it warm. She'd have to stop at the market at some point and seeing if she could find something she could use for a blanket at some point, but she was sure that could wait a little longer.
Sakura jumped up in excitement, and followed Gwen as she headed closer to the water. Perhaps if they walked along the water's edge for a while, they might find the Staryu or whatever water type they were looking for.

| While it may not have been the Staryu that Gwendolyn was hoping to find, there was indeed a water type floating around nearby. This particular pokemon happened to be a Ducklett, and though the ducks could usually be found in flocks, this particular one was quite alone. It may have been easy to assume a lone ducklett might be lost, this one was anything but. In fact, she swam quite confidently around on her own.
Indeed, she needed no flock. What was the point when every other Ducklett around were little more than uncouth hooligans who held themselves to no standard? She was not like them. She was not a ducklett at all! She was a Swanna trapped the ridiculous form of a duck. She was no hooligan, she was refined, graceful, and dignified. When the day came when she would finally evolve and assume her true form as a beautiful Swanna, was the day she would become perfect. Her feathers were never meant to be blue, they should be white! She should have the long beautiful neck, pretty posh eyes... Not huge blank ones that looked like they were drawn on! If she could have simply stayed in her egg until she evolved, she most certainly would have!
Alas though, like every other Swanna in the world, she was doomed to do her time as a Ducklett. I suppose it could be worse. She thought as she lingered on her problem. It could always be worse of course. What if she had been born a magikarp? The Ducklett shuddered at the possibility. Both hideous and simple minded creatures at birth, and even at evolution, they only became more ghastly in both looks and demeanor. Even a Feebas wouldn't have been much better. Hideous creatures, and though they supposedly evolved into something nearly as beautiful as a Swanna, she had no clue how that particular evolution even occurred.
Cringing slightly, the Ducklett decided it was time to find something to get her mind off this miserable topic. Looking around, her gaze fell on the shore, where she noticed a human walking along the beach with a rather... pretty... Mawile. Oh she think's she's so pretty? The Ducklett thought as her gaze narrowed on the steel type. Okay, the Mawile had done absolutely nothing to indicate such feelings towards herself, but the Ducklett knew. She knew that had to be what that smug, happy little deceiver had to be thinking, and here she was, romping around the beach like she was queen of the sands!
With her feathers ruffled up slightly, she made a bee-line straight for the trainer and her stuck up Mawile. The moment her pedaling feet touched the moist sands, she marched straight up to the Mawile, shoving her face right into Sakura's with no concern for the possible threat it could pose, and gave her an incredibly fierce glare that might have paralyzed if she tried any harder. "You think you're so pretty hmm? WELL WAIT TIL I PLUCK THAT PRETTY LITTLE HORN OFF YOUR POMPOUS LITTLE HEAD!" She squawked loudly, before blasting the Mawile point blank with a water gun attack.

| As they walked along the beach, Sakura gave a content sigh and broke into a run, stopping a few meters ahead of Gwen to allow her trainer to catch up. <The beach is so niiiice!> The Mawile exclaimed. Indeed, the beach was a fairly nice place to be, even at this time of year. The waves wafted lazily in and out, stoping only a few inches from where the trainer and pokemon walked. The sun was quite mild too, not blazing hot, but still enough to keep them comfortably warm.
Gwen smiled a bit as Sakura ran ahead. The mawile had shown a warrior-like persona when she first met her, though it seemed the Mawile also had a more playful and relaxed side as well. "I'm glad you are having fun." Gwen told Sakura as she caught up to her pokemon. She was glad that Sakura was able to relax, at least one of her starters did. Of course, Gwen preferred to have serious pokemon on her team, and Ignis fit well into that standard, but she also knew it was good for her pokemon to have some light-heartedness. They weren't soldiers after all, and she didn't want them to be.
For a while, Gwen and Sakura didn't encounter much of anything. She could see some wingull flying around in the distance, but they were too far away over the waters to possibly even think of engaging. Gwen didn't particularly mind that too much though. Gwen may have been interested in training a wide variety of pokemon, wingull were pretty low on her priority list. Extremely common, and simply not that appealing to her, she wouldn't mind having to wait a while for an opportunity to catch one.
The wingull weren't the only pokemon lingering about though. A little closer to shore, Gwen managed to spot a lone ducklett floating about lazily in the water a bit closer to shore. Of course, she had been looking for a Staryu, but given that she now already had a psychic type now, Gwen didn't mind deviating from her original desired pokemon. A ducklett was still a water type, and also a flying type as well, which made it even more practical to use against the ground types lingering about on Route One, even if it was exceptionally vulnerable to any electric types they happened to encounter along the way. Gwen didn't really know off the top of her head if there were any of those on the next route or not.
While unfortunately for them, the Ducklett was a little ways off. More fortunate though, the duck pokemon soon caught sight of them, and then took an interest in them. A rather keen interest infact, especially given that it was a feral pokemon. Weren't they supposed to be more skiddish of humans? Well, apparently this particular pokemon was a very bold exception, not seeming at all afraid of either her or Sakura, and further more not even being concerned about personal boundries as it shoved it's face straight into Sakura's.
<Hey!> Sakura gasped as she tried vainly to back away from the Ducklett who was now screaming furiously at her. The Ducklett unfortunately was intent on delivering whatever non-sensical message it had from two inches infront of the steel fairy type's face, and ended the entire spiel with a point blank water gun to her face, causing Sakura to stumble backward and cringe at the sudden moisture.
Gwen was surprised by how aggressive the Ducklett was in both it's apparent rant, and it's sudden attack. She couldn't begin to guess what had set the ducklett afoul, but now that it was clear that the duck wasn't just content to rage at her pokemon, this was now a battle. "Try to intimidate it, and follow up with play rough." Gwen ordered, figuring that the Mawile should at least take whatever chance she could to practice that particular ability, given that it would likely to be used under similarly harsh conditions once she had mastered it.
Sakura snorted furiously. Why the Ducklett was furious at her, she had no clue. She was just minding her own business! Now though, she was furious at it, and whatever that bird had said, it would soon regret it! Spinning around, she snapped her jaws and this time added a loud snarl for effect. She then launched herself at the Ducklett, bowling him over and slamming it roughly into the sand. <What's your problem?> She snapped furiously, despite the futility of trying to communicate with a pokemon that didn't understand a word she said.

| A smug little grin, or at least as much of one that could be accomplished with a beak, spread across the Ducklett's face after she caused the Mawile to stumble, and become unlawfully wet from her water gun attack. At the same time though, she suddenly realized she was breathing rather harshly. Was she that that freaked out? In reality most definitely, in her mind though she was blissfully unaware, and more willing to justify her rage, even if it was over something she merely imagined the Mawile to be saying.
When the Mawile spun around and tried snarling at her, Ducklett's face merely cringed up in disgust. <Not so pretty from the back side, are you missy?> She quacked disdainfully, though she inwardly shuddered a bit. The intimidate hadn't necessarily been successful as far as it's actual use went, but Ducklett did have to resist the urge to back away. Of course though, she wasn't going to give the Mawile the satisfaction of knowing that she had been a little intimidating. No, Ducklett stood her ground stubbornly. She may have been a pokemon of beauty, grace and poise, but she wasn't the one to back away from a fight that she started either.
Before Ducklett could contemplate her next move however, she was suddenly bowled over by the mawile and they both fell, rolling into the sand until the Mawile managed to pin her down and spit a few choice at her. First thing Ducklett did was shake her head, flinging away the spit that the Mawile had sprayed in her face. Of course, whatever the Mawile had truly said was a complete mystery to her, but she had no problem filling in the blanks with her own imagination. <Oh you disgusting creature, you keep telling yourself that!> Ducklett responded, yawning a bit at her. Mawile could assert her superior beauty all day, but that certainly wouldn't make it true!
Unfortunately though, Ducklett did realize she was in a rather vulnerable position pinned under this deluded little fairy. Well, it had worked once and it'd probably work again, so she decided to repeat her previous attack, firing another point blank water gun at the Mawile. Afterward she managed to squirm out from underneath the Mawile, and return to her feet. <Oh just keep coming dear, you're attacks are futile!> She proclaimed loudly. Just what the Mawile was thinking letting herself get in her face like that, well, Ducklett didn't mind it. If the deceiver pokemon was just going to allow her to nailing her with close range strikes, it was all the better for her!
Even though she certainly would not admit it in a million years, she did have to respect the Mawile's spunk. A lot of pretty girls she met would have turned tail at the first sign of a fight. They certainly wouldn't have had the guts to tackle anyone into the ground and risk getting a speck of dirt on their pretty little faces. She herself may not have been too keen to battle, if it weren't for the fact that she'd be forever stuck as a ridiculous looking ducklett if she didn't battle and become stronger.

| Gwen found it fairly amusing how both pokemon continued to talk and talk back at each other, despite the fact that neither of them could understand what the other was saying. Were they just filling in the gaps with their own imagination? It all was uncertain, but a possibility given the otherwise completely unprovoked attack from the Ducklett. Perhaps it was just habit, or simply how they kept their focus in battle? Now that she thought of it, fighting in complete silence didn't seem too easy.
When Gwen considered it, she realized just how harsh this world was. On PokeEarth, at least from what she learned of it, even wild pokemon were capable of understanding humans and all kinds of other pokemon. Here, it seemed to depend on a pokemon's type or breeding group whether they could understand each other or not, and feral pokemon couldn't understand humans at all. It was kind of sad, even though the people of PokeEarth had been granted a second chance, that second chance was far from free.
Sakura's thoughts on what the Ducklett was saying, weren't really as deep as her trainer's. All she knew was that the pesky water fowl was apparently very very angry with her, and was probably just spitting profanities at her or something. It also had terrible breath that smelled like swamp water. Yuck! Of course even though she had the Ducklett pinned down, that didn't stop it from firing it's water gun attack at her. Sputtering, she jumped back, gagging a bit and spitting out some of the water that had landed in her mouth. <Ick.> Was all she could say.
Gwen could see that the close quarters fighting, wasn't doing them too well as far as avoiding those point blank water gun attacks went, so she decided for a change in strategy. "Back off and attack from afar Sakura." Gwen told the Mawile. "Use Fairy wind." Gwen hoped that doing this, would allow them more freedom to avoid attacks. Sure, play rough was a fairly strong move especially for a low level pokemon, but the power would do them no good if Sakura took too many close hits like she had now twice in a row.
Sakura nodded, and immediately turned around to regain a few feet of distance while the Ducklett was still getting back on it's feet. Keeping her iron maw aimed at the Ducklett, she opened it up and unleashed a gust of sparkling pink fairy wind at the duck pokemon. "Can you handle that Ducky?" The Mawile teased, pausing momentarily to wipe a drip of water that had fallen from the top of her head to her eyes. It was just water, but it still came out of that duck's mouth, and it was hard not to think of it as spit.
As the battle wore on, Gwen let her attention shift down to the egg in her arms. Just what it would hatch into was a complete mystery. Another Espurr? It seemed likely since the Espurr she had captured had been trying desperately to protect it, even against the overwhelming odds it had against Ignis. Maybe it was something completely different though? Only time would really tell, and once she was certain it was keeping warm in her arms, she returned her attention to the battle.

| It was a bit of a relief when her water gun had managed to repel the self-absorbed mawile away. The mawile may have thought she was a pretty little thing, but that steel type weighed a ton! Perhaps maybe it was more that she was a complete featherweight, but of course Ducklett was more content to think badly of her opponent than believe herself to have such weakness.
When Ducklett, still on her back, looked on at the now dripping wet Mawile, she almost let out a loud guffaw. She quickly silenced herself and rolled back over. No no, that won't do at all. You are not some ruckus little Ducklett. You have grace, poise, and regality. You are a Swanna! She thought to herself, as she began to lose focus on the battle. Curses, a thousand of them. Even her own mind pushed her to buffoonery that was by no means proper. Once again yearning for evolution, she finally got back up to her feet.
Unfortunately, she only remained on her feet for a whole two seconds, before she got a harsh reminder that she was still in battle, in the form of sharp gust of pink sparkly wind? Regardless of the unoffensive appearance, the wind cut through her feathers and pushed her back, throwing her on her back. Once the attack was over, the Ducklett gaped slightly at the remnants of the pink wind. It.. so... That was pretty! Painful but... "LETT!!" The Ducklet suddenly bellowed furiously. She then scrambled back on her feet, eyes blazing with fury and fired yet another water gun attack at the Mawile.

| Sakura was of course, pleased as the Ducklett was knocked back by her fairy wind attack. That this seemed to throw the bird into a fit of rage, was just the icing on the cake. Fortunately though she was able to hold off on having a massive laughing fit long enough to anticipate the Ducklett's retaliating water gun attack, and jump out of the way to avoid it. After that though, she did submit to the urge to laugh her head off at the infuriated Ducklett.
"Keep your focus Sakura. Laughing at your opponent is more likely to lose you battles, not win them." Gwen ordered sternly. She had no tolerance for such behavior, especially in battle. The Ducklett already seemed peeved enough, and she knew it would only fight harder the worse it's mood became. "Fairy wind. Now."
Sakura cut off her laughter off when Gwen said so, but she frowned a bit as well. "But she's angry at a fair-- oh fine." Sakura begun, but cut herself off when it became clear that her trainer was not at all impressed. She then turned on the Ducklett itself, and fired yet another gust of Fairy Wind attack at it. She supposed Gwen had a point, but it wasn't like she had completely taken her focus off the battle. Orders were orders though, and she had to concede that she should focus on the battle at hand rather than laugh at how ridiculous the Ducklett's rage was, even if it was hilarious.

| How dare she. Just how DARE she. The four words just kept repeating in her mind, as the Ducklett seethed with fury. It wasn't enough the for the Mawile to just prance around like she was the prettiest thing around, she even had to make her ATTACKS pretty? That mawile didn't just think she was pretty, she was rubbing it right in!
At the sound of the Mawile's laughter, Ducklett stood there, fuming, her eyes reddening, and her feathers looked like they might just shoot right off her body for how much they were sticking out now. <STOP THAT. YOU CLASSLESS BUFFOON! STOP LAUGHING NOW!> The Ducklett squawked loudly as she charged full pelt at the Mawile. What she intended to do once she got to the Mawile was anyone's guess, given that she didn't have any moves that involved charging.
Unfortunately for the Ducklett though, no one would find out. The Mawile had shot yet another burst of fairy wind, and though at first it only slowed the bird down, the Ducklett was soon stopped and then sent flying backward, landing head first in the sand.
For a moment the Ducklett remained collapsed on the ground, apparently stunned. It seemed to recover fairly quickly though, as it's wings and legs began to flail a bit as it attempted to right itself, but it's head remained quite stuck in the ground. Oh... Uh-oh! was all the Ducklett could think as it realized that she was quite stuck! The ducklett suddenly panicked, doing everything it could to yank itself free, but her strength was quickly fading as her lungs begged for air.

| Gwen could sort of see where some might find the Ducklett's apparently insane level rage, amusing. Still, she had no idea what the Ducklett was even angry about, and she certainly wasn't the kind of person who took amusement at another being's anger. Combined with the sheer lack of productivity in the action, it was something Gwen would not accept, not from her own pokemon, not in the middle of battle.
The second fairy wind attack seemed to do its job, and perhaps it had done it a little too well. Within moments, the Ducklett was sent flying back, and it soon ended up landing with it's head buried in the sand. Both Gwen and Sakura simply paused while the duck pokemon tried in vain to free itself.
Once it was apparent that the Ducklett was stuck, Sakura let out an exasperated sigh. <Yeah yeah, I got it.> Sakura said before Gwen could say anything, not even trying to hide her lack of enthusiasm as she ran up and grabbed the Ducklett by the ankles, and began digging around the Ducklett's head, trying to free it.
Gwen came over as well, and also began digging around it. After a while, she grabbed the ducklett carefully by the body, and pulled, and the Ducklett's head shot out of the ground, greeting them with a loud, slightly muffled QUACK, before it began sputtering. "Take it easy, cough it out." Gwen said soothingly as she gently patted it's sides to help it expel what sand it might have fallen into it's lungs.
Fortunately, the Ducklett was much more preoccupied trying to cough out sand and inhale precious air into her body to really care about the fact that she was being handled by a human. Once most of the coughing subsided though, the Ducklett begun flailing in Gwen's arms, and she quickly let it go.
Sakura stood on guard, completely expecting the battle to resume, but even though the Ducklett managed to deliver a cold hard glare to her before hand, it ended up losing it's balance and falling back onto the ground, fainted from a combination of injuries and exhaustion. <Thank Arceus THAT'S over... Hey what... You aren't going to catch that... Seriously?> The Mawile gasped as she spotted Gwen pulling out a poke ball.
Gwen glanced at Sakura, reading her incredulous expression. "You really don't like that Ducklett do you?" She noted, though the Mawile did nothing to deter her from wishing to capture this pokemon. "Give it time, I'm sure it'll get over... whatever it is she's mad at you about." Gwen assured her, before tossing the poke ball at the Ducklett.
