Moth Sygnus Spilosoma
19 | Aporagender | Possibly Pan |
Survivor | Explorer/Pioneer | The Ambassador |
appearance
Moth is an albino with a slender build, and pale, delicate-looking skin. Their soft fluff-tufted hair is snowy white – with faded purple at the ends of two major tufts. Their rounded face bears a slightly upturned nose, and is usually adorned with a hesitant smile. Their scarlet eyes, while prone to becoming teary, tend to be round with the desire to take in all that they can see. In terms of posture, Moth can be a little fidgety, but usually stands straight. Having only been lightly hit by acne during puberty, Moth's facial skin is relatively clear - however, they bear assorted faint scars on other areas, due to a life mostly lived on the other side of the Portal. For this reason, they usually prefer long sleeves and trousers. Faceclaim: Nai of Karneval
clothing
everyday Moth tends to prefer long-sleeved tops and long trousers, and has become quite fond of the texture of Mi-aran materials. In terms of colour, they prefer pale hues, or at least gentle ones, as darker ones tend to make them look somewhat washed out. Other than that, they could be wearing any colour. | formal Moth does not own any formal wear at this time. However, if they did, it would likely also be in pale-to-gentle colours, and likely involve some variation on a bow tie. It is doubtful that there are yet any variations on the theme of tuxedo on Mi-aro, though, which has left Moth rather uncertain what counts as formal. |
backpack
Moth's backpack is olive in hue, and is rucksack like in design. It is relatively new, but Moth was given it by their family, and was not responsible for its purchase or creation, and is thus uncertain from where it came. There is plenty of space for stuff in it, and it already contains suncream and sunglasses.
Personality
Moth is a bit of a scaredy-cat, and easily spooked, but they constantly try to push past their fears. Like their mother, they are driven by an urge to be heroic, and this can cause them to take risks that their common sense would urge them to avoid. They are determined to prove themself, to themself as much as to their family, and they often scare themself trying. They're an example of someone who will “feel the fear, and do it anyway”, even though they actually tend to understand just why it might be a bad idea. They were originally a thinker more than an action-person, but they want to be someone who protects rather than someone who is protected – although they do quite like the sense of security and love that comes with feeling protected. They can seem rather naïve, but they're actually smarter than they seem – though they're no genius. They're also quite clingy, and love hugs – and almost any expression of affection. Not noogies, though, as they make them feel uncomfortable. They like stories and legends, particularly the ones with brave people in – not just heroes – though they tend to squeeze anyone and anything within reach during the scary parts.
Being able to help someone always brings a smile to their face, and tends to make them feel important – they also quite like the attention. If something is broken, they will likely try to fix it for these reasons, but without actually being that great at fixing things.... One of the things they like the most is to feel brave and dependable, and they will often try to be helpful for this reason. They hate to feel helpless or useless, and can be quite sensitive to teasing. They also don't like being told that there's nothing they can do to help, or that their assistance is unwanted. A word they dislike is “impossible”, and using it to tell them “no” often provokes them into unwise action. They feel self-conscious about themself, particularly regarding their fearfulness, the ease with which they can be made to cry, and their self-identity as a gender other than male, female or genderless. They also dislike bullies, though that one is quite obvious, and like to daydream the bullies' comic mild humiliation when they think of them. They like coming up with plans for what to do in several improbable hypothetical situations, though they tend to forget these if they don't write them down. They have their mother's spontaneity of action, but their father's patience and cunning when it comes to things they want – though their big brother tends to out-cunning them if both want the same thing. Despite being albino, they don't have vision problems unless things get too bright – then they need sunglasses – but they still need to be very careful of sunburn.
Another thing about Moth is their claustrophobia – they are prone to getting rather antsy in small spaces, and much prefer open areas. It is also quite easy to startle them when they're in a confined area, due to this nervousness. Moth's phobia is most acute where walls and wall-like structures are concerned – a densely wooded place would affect them less than a tiny room, because at least a portion of the sky and horizon would likely be visible if they looked hard enough. Speaking of the sky, this relatively sweet-natured individual has always had a yen for the great blue yonder, and cannot seem to resist the pull of the open air. Often, they have dreamed of having wings of their own – such vivid dreams that they could even feel the wind in their pinions – and it is one of Moth's fondest aspirations to one day fly. They don't care how, just so long as they can get into the air and soar. Perhaps it is for this reason that they are rather drawn to Pokemon that can fly, such as Flying, Dragon, Ghost, Bug, and sometimes Fairy. Moth is also quite fond of Pokemon that are fluffy and/or cute, and is of the opinion that these Pokemon are similar to them in some ways - underestimated but capable.

the backstory
Moth was born the youngest of two boys son to a Pokemon Ranger (Amadia Spilosoma nee Takoda, their mother) and a businessman (Ivan Spilosoma, their father) in Dendemille Town, where they were raised alongside their elder brother Boris. Their parents tended to be quite protective of them, particularly seeing as they seemed to get hurt easily during their early years, and they couldn't help but think of Moth as delicate – parental instincts kicking in there. Unfortunately, the world was decaying and crumbling around them as the young ones grew older, and Moth's dreams of setting out on a journey like that of their mother and brother seemed to be all in vain. Boris had come back from his in order to help protect the family, so what chance did Moth have? It wasn't as though they could contribute much to the defense of the family without Pokemon, but there was no way their parents would let them go out on a journey to get any in such circumstances. True, Pokemon journeys like the ones in the old stories weren't exactly the most likely things in the world anymore, due to encroaching doom, but Moth couldn't help but cling to the stories and want it for themself as their parents tried to shelter them from the harshness of the dying world around them.
Instead of battling, Moth usually ended up helping to carry stuff when the family had to abandon a site of habitation, or help set up defences if and when they were needed. Things grew progressively more untenable as time went on, whether because access to edibles and potable water was often difficult to obtain, because of some natural or unnatural hazard they encountered, or because of people-related hazards. By the time Moth was ten, their mother's Ranger equipment had all been damaged, destroyed or stolen, and their father had started to have quiet talks with her about their future when neither Boris nor Moth were around. While they had stayed in the old world for a long time for various reasons, such as protecting others in Amadia's case, or because it was the only home they had ever known, they started to seriously consider the possibilities afforded by the other world.
However, things weren't as simple as just choosing one way or another, even if that itself had been simple - there were many people who wanted to make that crossing, and countless obstacles in their way. For the Spilosomas, it was a long and arduous journey through many types of terrain - particularly seeing as they lost their way rather a lot due to changing landmarks and damaged navigational equipment. They had to fight for their lives many times - sometimes metaphorically, other times very literally - and Moth was beginning to wrestle with identity at this time. Not only matters of gender, but in general terms of defining themself. It was, after all, quite a shock to the system to go from sheltered to struggling, indoors to outdoors. Despite not having any Pokemon of their own, however, Boris had started to teach them how to work with Pokemon, lending them his own when things were quiet - just in case.
It took the family eight years to get to the Portal, due to one thing after another, and many arduous circumstances, but they eventually reached their destination. Despite it being the focus of their long voyage, Moth was a little scared of the Portal at first, but crossed through with the rest of their family all the same. Since then, they have been adapting to the new world they're now living in, and building a life there. It was only after finally being able to settle in a new area, where the world wasn't dying, that Moth was finally able to reflect on their identity without being distracted by apocalyptic struggles, and there were people from all kinds of places and situations who'd come through the Portal before them that they could ask advice from. Following the completion of their new home, and Moth's nineteenth birthday, the tufty-haired albino was finally able to seek out a mentor and obtain a Starter - fulfilling a long-standing dream. They set out on their journey with the intent to prove themself and build their confidence, one way or another – but Moth has yet to find their niche. However, the idea of being an explorer, possibly a pioneer, appeals to their sense of adventure, and they don't think it'd be too incompatible with their existing experience.
