True to his word, Liridon had hastened to the Gogoat transport as soon as he had completed his last-minute shopping, eager to get started with his new mission. He was a little annoyed, as his new supplies had eaten up most of his money, but it was all stuff that he felt he needed - he felt somewhat safer now that he was in possession of a dagger, with a crowbar for emergencies. It wasn't that he didn't have faith in Alwyn, but he didn't want his new little starter to have to shoulder all of the pressure of defending them. If he was going to send Alwyn into battle, he felt he had to be willing to take part himself if necessary. As for the other things, well, a compass would help him avoid getting too lost, while something to carry the water he filtered in was practically a must - as was something to start a fire if he got cold or wished to cook something. Finally, the trail rations, so as to avoid having to resort to foraging automatically. He'd still look out for wild food, but at least he'd have something to fall back on for a while. Sighing, the Researcher resigned himself to picking up dropped coins for a bit, at least until he could earn some more with whatever findings he had. Perhaps he was thinking of this in too miserly a fashion, but he just didn't like parting with the majority of his coin all at once.
Liridon was jarred out of his contemplation of the sorry state of his wallet when Alwyn prodded him gently in the side. "Hmm? What is it?" He mumbled, before realising that they were no longer in motion - they had arrived in New Pallet. All at once, excitement and treipidation welled up his stomach and jangled along his nerves once more - he had a swarm of Spinarak to analyse, and a Professor to impress. Oh, yes, and there were some people who needed help too - better to not forget them. Thanking the Gogoat and their handler, Liridon scooped Alwyn up into his arms again and stepped out onto the ground. He could have returned the little fellow to his Pokeball, but he felt like having some company in this new place - he'd never been to New Pallet before - and supposed too that the Elgyem could use the fresh air. The weather was less clement than it had been earlier, as the sky was darkened by the looming oppressiveness of grey clouds. Not black, nor threatening immediate rain, but enough to lend a gloomy feel to the place. The wind had picked up as well, and tousled Liridon's tied-back hair as it passed. There weren't many people left outside - as far as the Researcher could tell, most of the population had either shut themselves away indoors, or had left town. The windows were mostly boarded up, and he'd bet his last three coins that the doors were barricaded. Just how many Spinarak were there? Or perhaps the question was, how big were they? Considering that feral Pokemon were sometimes prone to mutation, he supposed that he couldn't make many assumptions about them besides that they were Spinarak.
Speaking of information, since he was still in a relatively safe (for the time being) part of the locale, he decided to check up on what the X-Gear had to say about his solemnly hushed little partner. While it was a little difficult to work the controls with Alwyn in his arms, it allowed the Elgyem to see how to activate it, which Liridon supposed was a bonus. He'd meant to perform this check before setting out, but he'd gotten wrapped up in acquiring supplies earlier. It was always useful to know what one's partner was capable of, especially when venturing into the unknown. Once he had performed the check, he approached one of the only other people he could see who were still outside - a harrassed-looking woman who seemed to be searching for something - perhaps she was looking for anyone left outside? No matter, he had information to acquire. "Excuse me, I'm one of the Oak-appointed Researchers sent here to study the Spinarak - do you think you could point me in the direction of the swarm, by any chance?" He asked, coming up alongside her. It was difficult for him to interpret her expression when the question was posed, but she answered him readily enough. "You want to go that way, they're in the forest at the moment - but we think they'll get to the town soon if nobody stops them. I hope you know what you're doing - you'd better have a weapon, or so help me, I think they'll walk all over you." She responded, in tones that implied that - while she was grateful that help was being sent - she thought he was a crazy person. "Anyway, once you're among the trees, just follow the webs and you shouldn't go too far wrong." She concluded, shaking her head, before moving on at a hurried walk, leaving him and Alwyn to their own devices.
Although the woman he'd spoken to hadn't been very encouraging, at least she had told him where to go. Taking a moment to pull out his compass and make a note in his Data Log of which direction relative to North he was to go, he hoped that it would be enough to help him find New Pallet again when he was done in the woods. Then, readying his dagger for easy access and moving his crowbar and Potion to the top of his bag, he felt that it was time to do some sneaking around. He'd had to put Alwyn on the ground to do all this, but perhaps it would be best if he had his arms free from here on in. Making a shushing gesture to indicate that they should be quiet, Liridon led his partner towards the trees with soft footfalls. When they drew closer, his footfalls began to become uneven - sometimes he hesitated to check for movement, while other times he advanced more quickly for a short distance. This uneveness made the hushed sounds of his progress a little easier to mistake for background noise, but it meant that his progress was slow. He wasn't deliberatly trying to complicate things, however - he was just paranoid. Alwyn, caught up in the excitement, was doing his best to emulate his new partner, and looked around whenever Liridon did.
After a little while of this, peering around intently, the twosome began to see shimmering pale threads of something in and around the trees. I think we're getting closer... Liridon thought, feeling his heartbeat in his ears as he gently extricated some of the soft and sticky substance and stowed it in his pockets. Part of the reason he'd been so eager for this assignment was the potential for samples. Something moved some way up ahead - a vague flickering of a shape between the trees and bushes of the forest. It could have been anything, even simple plant movement in the wind, but Liridon was unwilling to take that chance. Sneaking closer quietly, he and Alwyn peered carefully out around themselves - mostly ahead, but up, around and behind as well. No sense in chancing an ambush when they were aiming to spy upon dangerous creatures. Certainly, Liridon planned to help thwart the swarm before they hit New Pallet, but he dearly wished to first observe their behaviour when they were not necessarily aware that he was present - that was why he was taking such pains to conceal his presence. Sure, they'd notice him sooner or later, but he was hoping to get a chance to scope out the situation before they did.
