Jellal Hart
Recruited By: Olive
Age: 28
Gender: Cis. Male
Orientation: Pansexual
Profession: Researcher
Occupation: Portal Mechanics & Crystal Collector
Mentor: Quercus Oak
Appearance: The first thing everyone notices about Jellal are his eyes. Even hidden behind the bulky glasses he’s forced to wear, due to his terrible nearsightedness, their silver, lunar glow can pierce you right to the very core of your being. He almost always has an intense look about him, but if you get him in a good mood he’ll lighten up the entire room. His nose is sharp and lips are just on the thin side of full. He has medium length, blue-black hair that he wears half up, half down.
His face is both strong and soft, a combination that gives him a look somewhere between boy and man, and his skin is pale with a pink tent. Standing at the slightly below average height of 5’8” intensifies his boyish “charms”, but he makes up for it with a muscular build that rivals that of a male gymnast (just not as bulky). He weighs somewhere around 170 lbs., most of which is muscle.
Everyday Clothes: Jellal wears a one layer, burgundy furfa shirt. It’s long sleeved but he rolls them up in the summer. His pants are hand-me-down, black denim with sewn tears and some patches of black furfa where the hole got too big to sew up. He wears black leather boots that are well worn but still in decent condition. He also wears a hook earring, with a bauble at the end of a silver chain that resembles a gold crystal, in his left ear.
Formal Garbs: N/A
Pack: His bag has a circular shape and it resembles Gyarados scales in both look and color. Made of both leather and furfa, it is sturdy and durable. It sits like a half circle on his back and the scale like body folds up nearly completely flat to open. The inside has many pouches and pockets to separate items so they aren’t just sat inside the bag and are secure while transporting.
Personality: Passion. Pure, unadulterated passion. That’s what drives Jellal. He has never been the type to take no for an answer, which has proven itself to be both a blessing and your worst nightmare. Not many people can keep up with him and that’s just the way he likes it. Having had to fend for himself for the majority of his life he doesn’t take a likening to people very easily. He would rather be with Pokémon than people any day of the week. Being around people, especially large groups, gives him major anxiety. The only kind of person he has ever been able to stand for more than a very short period of time are those the senior citizen variety. Especially if there’s tea involved.
He’s very analytical and quite clever, which is great for his field, but makes him come off a bit rigid to most. He puts up a very strong front that is rarely broken for any reason. That being said, his tough exterior hides a lot. He has major abandonment issues and doesn’t allow himself to get close to people because he is afraid of losing them. In his mind anyone he has ever loved has gone away from him, so he must be the problem. That’s the reason he dives so deeply into his work. This way he seemly has no free time to spend making connections with others.
Due to his strong drive and intensely, stubborn attitude, Jellal has no real awareness of the consequences his actions take. He isn’t the type to hesitate in the face of danger and in return tends to put others in danger by default. Though he would never purposefully put someone else at risk, he has a hard time resisting a challenge and is always up for something to put his brain to the test. This has gotten him in much trouble in the past and will no doubt continue that trend on into the future.
Zodiac Sign: Virgo
Likes: Pokémon, photography, exotic plants, mild temperatures, cloudy skies, the color of creamed coffee, tea, feeling like a part of nature, and storms…
Dislikes: Murder (of Pokémon), society, "unsolvable" puzzles, meat, wearing glasses, Oak’s constant check-ins, talking to strangers, heights, and spicy foods…
Backstory: A blinding, white light. That’s the only thing he remembers. Nothing of the world before and nothing of what came immediately after. Just that light.
Three years after the Legend Portal had been opened, a small boy, who shared his birthday with the Portal, stumbling across its line into this new, fantastic world. Alone, with only the clothes on his back and a small toy, he stood at the base of this great monument. Not knowing where his parents were or what had happened to that strange light, the boy sat down on the steps leading up to the entrance (–er exit?) and began to sob. As he sat there a small Solosis appeared and began rubbing against his leg. When he looked up from his tears the boy noticed a man approaching. He looked confused.
The elderly man's name was Ezra Hart and that was his Solosis, Nuclear. The boy bore a striking resemblance to his late son which took the man aback for a moment. After coming to his senses and looking around to find that the child seemed to have no family to speak of he decided to take matters into his own hands and ask the boy if he would like to come home with him. Mr. Hart's son had passed away about 5 years prior to this encounter due to a tragic fire that took their home. With their only child gone, his wife couldn't bear it and followed shortly after from what could only be described as a broken heart. Left all alone he fought to find motivation for life until the Portal had been opened and there was a chance to leave all the heartache that PokéEarth had caused him.
The boy began to live with Mr. Hart in his small, one bedroom home. It proved to be a transition for the both of them since the child had obviously been born to young parents and the man was not used to having a youngster running about the house. For a while it seemed as if they never had enough food to go around, yet there was always a pot of tea to be had from the man's personal stores that he had brought over. He was a bit traditional in that sense and taught the boy all he could about the art of preparing and serving tea, which the boy never learned to appreciate until later in life. They would sit together each day, the man, the boy, and Nuclear (who had evolved into a Duosion), and drink a cup of tea together.
Although the man had become like a second father to the boy he couldn’t help wondering who his parents were and why they hadn’t followed him though the portal. He would frequently go to the spot where the Legend Portal stood and sit there for hours just watching to make sure they didn’t happen to come though. At first this worried Mr. Hart, but in a way he understood the pain the boy must have been going through and knew if there was any chance of his long lost family stumbling through that portal he would have been doing the same. In a way this made the man more connected to the boy and he vowed to help him in any way he could to discover a way to find his parents.
When the man felt like the boy was old enough he began to teach him everything he knew about Pokémon and the world they had left so many years ago. He would tell him stories of his travels in that world and how he fell in love with his wife, only touching the surface of how their time together finally ended. More importantly, however, were his studies and lessons on the origin of the Portal and this special energy that originated from it. There wasn’t much information on it, but what little there was the boy soaked up like a sponge. Mr. Hart had told him if he could discover more about this subject he might be able to unlock the key to finding his parents.
The boy and Nuclear grew to be best friends and never left each other’s sides. When they weren’t studying together they were out getting into some sort of mischief that Mr. Hart would have to take care of or making some sort of mess that they would have to clean up. Not having had very many (if any) human friends, Nuclear had quickly become the boys most trusted and loyal companion. It was almost as if they had some sort of psychic connection that allowed them to understand each other with no audible words being produced.
Everything seemed to be going great for this little family of misfits, but when the boy was about 10 years old the man began to fall sick. They were unsure of what caused this sickness and because of the lack of medical supplies and actual doctors it was difficult to promise a speedy recovery, if any. He held on for three years before finally passing away in his sleep. The boy was devastated. Another loved one gone. Another parental figure taken. That just left him and Nuclear, now a fully evolved Reuniclus, to fend for themselves, but the boy was so distraught he forgot to eat for a week. The only thing that snapped him out of this state was when he found a note left to him for the man telling him to keep looking for a way to find his parents. This set his passion ablaze and forced him to keep pushing forward.
In the years after Mr. Hart’s death, the boy, who soon became a man himself, scrounged for any new information on the Legend Portal and its special Portal Energy. He learned that there were crystals around Mi-aro that somehow was able to hold this energy scrambled to find more information on them as it came out. He also began studying to become a researcher himself and learning as much as he could about the field. Nothing would stand in the way of him finding his parents and fulfilling the old man’s final wish.
